(From Encyclopedia entry - clean and update)

*Some clean up stuff: To create the pacifist "Pilgrim Ghydin", all the violence, aggression, and other similar facets of Micah's personality were locked away; and during the shattering of the psyche that is part of the assimilation process, those traits were magnified to create the new 45 of 300. (REFs)
*45 of 300 was transfered to the Cube #347 sub-collective at the same time as Captain, whereupon he took over the head of the weapons hierarchy and has held it ever since. (Captain's Tale REJ)
*Assimilation does not end the single-mindedness of Micah to free his Brotherhood, and when the chance presents, he attempts to reassurt control. 2
*<and so forth, creation of Ghost and other such things>

Former member of Species #8319, 45 of 300 was born Micah, on Relax of the Nion system in the Beta Quadrant ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). Micah entered the priesthood of the Brotherhood of Galactic Love, rising in the ranks to be a Very Important Person ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). As the Ijexian Empire had interdicted the Nion system to stop the spread of the Brotherhood and their mind-warping Flowers, Micah volunteered himself to slip beyond the weapon platforms and search for a way to release the planet's populace ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). Micah was successful in his escape, traveling to a freeport ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). Once there, in order to evade detection from the authorities, he purposefully fractured his personality, producing Pilgrim Ghydin of a peaceful wandering religious sect ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). Pilgrim Gyndin hitchhiked around the quadrant for the next several years, unaware of his real past while the hidden Micah personality watched ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). Approximately 28 years prior to the current assignment, Gyndin's freighter was captured by Borg and himself subsequently assimilated ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). During the assimliation process, 45 of 300's personality was built through a breaking of Pilgrim Ghydin's quasi-mind and behind-the-scenes manipulation by Micah, producing a paranoid, destructive construct ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]). 45 of 300 was delivered to Cube #347 at the same time as Captain ("Captain's Tale" [REJ]). The Weapons position is supposed to be a lottery among the weapon hierarchy, but upon awakening for the first time, 45 of 300 claimed the spot and has refused to relinquish it ever since ("Captain's Tale" [REJ]; "This is Borg?"[BRG]). He does not get along well with Delta, and much to her disgust, enjoys Klingon opera ("In Space, No One Can Hear You Panic" [BRG]). His bloodthirsty attitude has led to him destroying objects unnecessarily when he isn't foiled by the current Captain or Second. For instance, he has blown up a colony ship ("This is Borg" [BRG]), accidentally "slipped" in the case of a species #8511 ship ("This is Borg" [BRG]), produced excessive damage during battle simulations ("Borg vs. Borg" [BRG]), tried to take on a Xenig mech ("The Check Is In the Mail" [BRG]), and used miscellaneous satelites as target practice ("A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste" [BRG]). The lust for destruction has risen beyond the BorgCraft dataspace-only battle simulator ("Borg vs. Borg" [BRG]), turning into a holographic version installed throughout most of Cube #347 ("Please State the Nature of the Medical Emergency"; "Brotherly Love"; "Me, Myself, and I" [BRG]). Weapons firmly believes the "ends justify the means" ("Borg vs. Borg"; "Brotherly Love" [BRG]) Amazingly, Weapons' quest to turn everything into small pieces of debris has not led to his personal injury. He sole serious contest for control of the weapons hierarchy was by new drone 89 of 300 ("Borg vs. Borg" [BRG]). The rivalry rose exponentially when the pair was kidnapped by Bob, a noncorporeal being from a black hole, as linear test subjects ("Borg vs. Borg" [BRG]). Weapons was returned to Cube #347 because of his unsuitable, paranoid tendencies ("Borg vs. Borg" [BRG]). Weapons has also had his body taken over by his birth personality, Micah; with help from the Pilgrim Ghydin contruct, Micah was beaten back and erased ("Brotherly Love" [BRG]).

The Order of Koh is a nomadic quasi-religious sect found in the Ijexian Empire. Members are tasked to look for Divine Places, find Interesting Things, and offer bargain-basement religious-based services. The sect is very small; and because the few members are continually on the move, it is rare for them to meet each other outside of designated gathering places. Of Koh himself, long vanished under mysterious circumstances, an outsider might just say he had all the hallmarks of a conman. That is, of course, a matter of perception. ==Summary==
Awakening from a vague and unsettling dream, Pilgrim Ghydin leaves his rented sleep coffin and commences his normal day-to-day routine. As a member of the nomadic Order of Koh, Ghydin's purpose in life is to quest for Divine Places, seek out Interesting Things, and offer bargain-basement prices for a wide variety of religious ceremonies. Ghydin is a specialist in technological exorcism.

Kakata Station, of the Ijexian Empire, is only the latest of stops for Ghydin. After a day that includes removing virii from computer systems, a mugging, and finally a blessing that nets a substantial tip, the pilgrim acquires sufficient funds to continue his wanderings. The destination if Pikata Station, and the mode of travel is the freighter StarRat.

Aboard StarRat, Ghydin's odd dreams continue, but all is otherwise boring routine. Then Something happens to disrupt the normal, a Something that is a large, blue ring that chases down StarRat and swallows it. Spat back into the normal universe at the other end of the portal, StarRat, crew, and passengers find themselves in a system recently assimilated by the Borg.

Unfortunately, the general populace of the Ijexian Empire has no clue who or what the Borg are; and with warp engines off-line and confronted with an apparently grumpy and hostile race, StarRat does her best to flee on impulse.

StarRat does not get very far. The decision is made to abandon ship and leave the freighter behind as bait, except the small (and warp-capable) runabout does not have sufficient room to hold everyone. Ghydin magnanimously offers to remain behind, which offends the dream-voice to no end. Finally the first of the Borg cubes catch StarRat. As the runabout casts off, the phenomenon which transported all to the system in the first place reappears. During the confusion which includes the lead cube exploding, Ghydin's dream-voice is revealed to be Micah, member of the Brotherhood of Galactic Love and original owner of Ghydin's body. Micah attempts to reassert control of the body, but Ghydin fights. By the time Micah succeeds, the runabout has vanished through the phenomenon, which itself has vanished again. Seeing defeat, Micah retreats back into the darkness of Ghydin's mind, leaving the pilgrim behind to meet the Borg alone.
Story Notes
I have always been fascinated by space stations, for it is there that I feel that the "real" culture of the Star Trek universe emerges. Except for Deep Space Nine, the Star Trek canon is focus on a vessel, a military ship with all the limitations thereof. In the case of the Next Generation Enterprise, it doesn't matter that children are aboard...the situation is more the feeling of a mobile base and less a neighborhood community. With this Weapons story, I decided to spend at least part of the story aboard a non-military station and provide a peek into a vibrant, non-Federation culture.

The rest of the story, well, Weapons is a very complicated personality. On the surface he appears to be very one-dimensional, a war looking for a place to happen. He is...but the process that created Weapons is very convoluted and the assimilation of Pilgrim Ghydin is only one facet of a much longer story. It is perhaps less stand-alone than the other Assimilations stories because I refer to circumstances that can only be known if the reader has read Brotherly Love. However, in the end, I consider the Weapons character among the most complex.

As a side note, within the story there are various references to various books or movies I like.
*Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - Ghydin carries a threadworn floral towel
*Gremlins - cameo in the form of a "Moploi", although in this cute and cuddly looking creature is quite addicted to caffeine

Story Notes
I have always been fascinated by space stations, for there is where I feel that the "real" culture of the Star Trek universe emerges. Except for Deep Space Nine, the Star Trek canon is focus on a vessel, a /military/ ship with all the limitations thereof. In the case of the Next Generation Enterprise, it doesn't matter that children are aboard...the whole situation creates a feeling that is more along the likes of a mobile base and less a neighborhood community. With this Weapons story, I decided to spend at least part of the story aboard a non-military station and provide a peek into a vibrant, non-Federation culture.

The rest of the story, well, Weapons is a very complicated personality. On the surface he appears to be a one-dimensional being, a war looking for a place to happen. He is...but the process that created Weapons is very convoluted and the assimilation of Pilgrim Ghydin is only one facet of a much longer story. In the end, I consider the Weapons character among the most complex.

Summary

Summary
Jas is a recently graduated veterinarian on his way to a new job with the up and coming gas and volatile mining company CHON. Seffites, of which Jas is a typical specimen, are best described as pet-crazy; and, thus, most Seffite companies include vets on their payroll in order to minister to the many inevitable companions that employees own. With Jas is his good friend and fellow vet Plent. Finally, rounding out the ship's crew is Bruno, the Seffite equivalent of a cat.

Partway through the trek to their new home, Jas and Plent detour their ship to see the phenomenon known as Entropy. Entropy was constructed by a long-vanished race, and employs technology that warps time. While at Entropy, the pair witness a Borg cube exit transwarp too close to the construction, ending up as a smear across an asteroid which was in orbit around the phenomenon. After the startling happenstance, Jas and Plent convince each other that the wreckage represented a one-time chance to find trophies.

They end up leaving the Entropy system not only with several toys, but the unconscious and heavily damaged Borg drone that Jas insists on saving.

The drone is saved from termination by an extensive bout of surgery by the two vets. While damage to the body is either repaired or mitigated, a piece of shrapnel lodged in the brain is not touched. The Borg is secured in an alcove also saved from the wreckage; and when he wakes up, it becomes apparent that he is severed from the Collective. The drone, speaking in the singular, manages to inform Jas and Plent that his name is Dakeen Frimiz. Over the next several days, Dakeen - a member of the Ratif race - slowly recovers memories of his self before his assimilation even as nanites complete body repairs.

To thank the two Seffites for saving him, Dakeen, a former engineer, embarks on a bout of tinkering to build devices in order to extend the functionality of the veterinarian ship. The gifts have a strangely Borg quality to them, but otherwise function as advertised. Unfortunately, one of the projects turns out to be a subspace booster that reconnects Dakeen to the Collective. In his defense, Dakeen was not fully aware of what he was constructing, but the end result was the same: Dakeen becomes increasingly subsumed by his Borg personality - 18 of 21, primary processor of unimatrix 002.

The drone formerly known as Dakeen takes over the ship less than a day out from the vet's final destination. Although he could have assimilated both vets in their sleep, as is done to Plent, Dakeen wakes Jas long enough to apologize and to inform him that he will make an excellent medical drone.
One of the things that assimilation imperfection tends to do is to magnify existing obsessions and compulsions. Perhaps in this realization is the key to prevent the malady in the first place, should the Collective ever recognize it. However, such is unlikely to occur as long as I am writing BorgSpace stories. Anyway, in this case, the Doctor story was fairly straightforward, with the most difficult aspect, in my estimation, showing the Jas personality and the hints on how it eventually mutated to the drone who sees the universe (and all within) through pet-colored glasses.
12 of 19 - presently subdesignated Delta - was born on the Grikite colony world of Bridi as the twins Kitra and Leeta. Following their schooling, both were hired to the ship design firm of Astro-Engineering, as well as joined the local militia. While neither really expected Borg to attack their backworld colony, such did happen; and the militia was finally sent into action to defend their hometown of Grishna as the last line of defense. When Grishna was finally, and definitely, overrun by Borg, Leeta was badly hit by a disruptor and both ultimately captured.1
(From Encyclopedia entry - clean and update)

12 of 19 was born Leeta and Kitra, twins girls on a Grikite colony world ("The Latest Fad" [BRG]). After a series of bad personal choices that began in his childhood and continued through finding a shuttle of crash-landed Borg, not only was Thyeo denied revenge against the Toley Family arm of the Sabeen Mob, but he doomed his entire race to assimilation. Or allowed his planet's inhabitants to become part of the quest towards Perfection. 3 of 8, or Second, is a member of the Hierarchy Of Eight and the secondary or backup consensus monitor and facilitator on Cube #347. He has a bit of a sarcastic streak. A very large bit.

3 of 8 was assimilated 35 years before the current task as a child on a colony world ("A Very Long Distance Call" [BRG]). He was chosen by Captain to be Second this rotation after a series of smart-alec remarks ("This is Borg?" [BRG]), and has been very sarcastically vocal over the dislike of his position every since ("This is Borg?"; "The Only Certainty in Life is Borg and Taxes"; and many others [BRG]). Upon his alcove, which is adjacent to Captain's ("This is Borg?" [BRG]), he has hung the "winner" plaque for Super Jhad-ball LXII tournament, engraving Cube #347's name on the list ("In the Glow of Glory, Only One Shall Remain" [BRG]). The current rotation as Second did not start out well, with him trapped in a shrine room of a species #8511 ship ("This is Borg?" [BRG]). Species #8511 figured again into later woes when he was attacked by a blue grouf apparation sporting many red eyes ("Fifth Dimension" [BRG]). Second has been electrocuted by a drug smuggling freighter ("Jovian Dust" [BRG]), been captain of a Jhad-ball team, during which he was knifed in the back ("In the Glow of Glory, Only One Shall Remain" [BRG]), and had his mind switched with that of Yeoman Tina Jones from Waystation ("A Very Long Distance Call" [BRG]). Like Captain, Second has had his share of kidnappings - at one point he was taken by a bored Q and given Q powers ("We Are Q" [BRG]), and much later (well after removal of Q power), was one of the last drones on Cube #347 to be bandersnatched ("Of Jabberwock, Jubjub Birds, and Bandersnatch" [BRG]).

Summary
Born on the Grikite colony world of Bridi, Kitra and Leeta are twins with a talent for engineering. Twins are uncommon among the Grikite race; and these particularly close twins were hired together to Astro-Engineering in the town of Grishna when their schooling was complete.

Kitra, as the dominant twin of the pair, wants to /do/ something to strike out against the Borg, even if it only a symbolic defiance. To this end she convinces her sister to join the militia with her, although in truth it is the marines stationed on the planet who would oversee any military response should the Borg strike a backwater planet like Bridi.

The Grikite are members of a three-species alliance known as the Combine. Far from Bridi, the Borg increasingly press the Combine. Normally the Bridi shipyards are a bustling place where luxury liners and workhorse freighters are constructed. However, to fight back, a new class of vessels called "Borg Killer" are under secret construction. Unfortunately, the Borg learnt of the attempt at resistance (perhaps via assimilation), and thus Bridi is attacked by three Battle-class cubes.

The Borg Killers are not the defense that twelve years of Combine planning had hoped they would be. Instead, the ten finished ships, plus their eleventh half-constructed sister, all are destroyed, along with the Bridi shipyards. In return, the Borg trio lose a single attacker, with a second heavily damaged. Then a luxury liner in orbit sacrifices itself to ram the damaged cube, destroying it and seemingly cooking the remaining Battle-class in the resultant radiation burst.

Unfortunately, "seeming" is insufficient when dealing with the Borg; and especially when that Borg ship a Battle-class cube. Despite massive casualties and lack of reinforcements, the assault is renewed, this time directed at the surface.

On the ground, the marines stationed on Bridi hold their own at first. However, the inevitable slowly happens until, in the end, even a sleepy town like Grishna comes under attack. Where the marines were unsuccessful at repelling the Borg, the local militia, of which Kitra and Leeta are members, have no chance.

As the story closes, amid the confusion of battle, Leeta is hit by a Borg disruptor. Instead of fleeing, Kitra remains by her sister, even as the latter slips into unconsciousness and drones loom overhead.
Story Notes
In the BorgSpace stories, 12 of 19 has always been depicted as close, so much so that for all practical purposes she is one mind that just happens to be housed in two bodies. The individual bodies can function alone, although very poorly; and certainly not at the caliber required for an engineering drone. One of the primary aspects of writing this story was to show that even before assimilation, the persons then known as Kitra and Leeta were close. It was perhaps inevitable that even assimilation could not tear them apart, only force them closer together.

Now, about the title. All the Assimilation mini-series stories incorporate their respective characters' BorgSpace subdesignations. Delta probably represented the greatest challenge, and I will be the first to admit that the final title here was a bit of a stretch. In this case, "delta" is equated with the Greek symbol (a little triangle); and that symbol is often used in scientific notation to stand for a change in status. Thus, "delta T" represents a change in temperature; and "delta v" designates a change in velocity. And "Delta Life"? Well, Kitra and Leeta did undergo quite a change in lifestyle....

Summary
Thyeo del Frantz is introduced as a troubled young Sabeenian man; and as the story develops, a case can be made for borderline sociopath. Molded by both his family situation and society expectations at large, he becomes obsessed with his mother; and, specifically, providing for her a 'perfect' life free of cares and needs. His early attempt to achieve perfection for his mother begins with his entry into the Toley Family of the Mob, and ends with his conviction for drug possession, a casualty of Mob and corrupt government politics. Instead of blaming society or his personal choices for his ills, he focuses thoughts of revenge upon the Family that abandoned him.

Thyeo is released half-way through his 10-year prison term into a work parole program. Due to an increase in Borg incursions to Sabeen space, requirements upon the defense industry have skyrocketed; and those citizens without a means to refuse (e.g., bribe) have been drafted into the work force.

After seeing a fireball from space fall into the game reserve (where all the wildlife worth anything has long since been sold) behind his trailer house, Thyeo takes off to find it. Be it meteorite, shuttle debris, of satellite pieces, he plans to make a quick buck off of it, sending as much money as possible to his mother. What he finds is a crash-landed shuttle and four Borg. Of the quartet, three survived.

Sensing an opportunity, Thyeo confronts the Borg. After a graphic "demonstration" on a badly wounded drone, the number of Borg reduced to two. Thyeo subsequently renames his new acquaintances Drone 1 and Sparky. The drones are still linked to the Collective, but since the Greater Consciousness cannot retrieve them without losing the only local cube asset in the process, the drones are fated to remain where they are. Tame Borg, by Thyeo's estimation, offer a much greater potential pay-off than space debris, one which will allow him to enact revenge against the Toley Family and gain his mother riches.

The two drones request items necessary to jury-rig regeneration alcoves. Thyeo returns to the crash site with the items, as well as a Sabeen version of the shocking dog collar, which will ensure the drones do as he orders. Eventually Thyeo readies his plan of revenge, and the drones are smuggled into the city (and neighborhood) of his abbreviated childhood.

After spreading rumors which hint that representative of another Mob Family with interests in the drug market is infiltrating Toley Family territory, Thyeo's warehouse base is paid a series of "visits". The enforcers are all caught by his captive Borg...and assimilated to be Borg themselves to be added to Thyeo's growing army. A bit at a time, then faster and faster, Thyeo claims more territory, more drones, more power, until he finally faces off against the Toley Family itself.

The Toley Family compound is invaded. The only obstacle between Thyeo and total success is the Toley bigboss, who is holding Thyeo's mother hostage. With the dilemma before him, when Drone 1 offers a potential plan that will secure his mother unharmed, Thyeo takes it.

As the story draws to a close, it seems that Thyeo has all that he has ever desired: revenge against Toley family, a future of leisure for his mother, riches. He even starts to dream of the next step, which is to start his own Mob Family. However, all his plans come to a screeching halt as Drone 1, Sparky, and several other drones demonstrate that the collars - modified during the process to secure Thyeo's mother from the ex-Toley bigboss - no longer work.

And so the Collective's plan is a success - Thyeo is no longer needed (as an unassimilated individual), and it is estimated that in less than a year that the Sabeen race will be completely assimilated.

*Thyeo had been given a second chance at life with his release from prison, a second chance to start clean. A second chance is a precious thing, a wiping of the slate, and it is the rare person who receives such. Instead, he had squandered that second chance by pursuing a personal vendetta, an old obsession, dredging up the past, a past which had more or less forgotten his existence. Thyeo's mother had recognized the chance for what it was, but her wise counsel to not return to the city had went unheeded. Now, the whole of the Sabeen race was to pay; and if second chances are scarce, third chances are even rarer. Thyeo was about to receive a third chance at life...an involuntary third chance for a life many in the universe considered not life at all.
Story Notes
I find this story to be the most psychologically "vivid" of the Assimilation mini-series. While the tale of Assimilation may delve more intimately into the primary character, in that case many of the reactions and behaviors were the result of manipulation of an outside force. In the case of Thyeo, all which occurred were due to choices made by the individual. The following paragraph is, perhaps, the crux of the entire story:

*Thyeo had been given a second chance at life with his release from prison, a second chance to start clean. A second chance is a precious thing, a wiping of the slate, and it is the rare person who receives such.
Unlike the other Assimilation mini-series stories, Thyeo-the-pre-assimilated-individual is not a nice person. He is, in fact, a budding (if not actual) sociopath, not to mention a hearty streak of narcissism disguised as a desire to do anything for his mother. Assimilation seems to have mellowed out the 3 of 8 found in the main BorgSpace stories, or at least focused his energy in a new direction. On the other hand, the sarcastic nature which eventually is magnified upon Thyeo's assimilation is only hinted at in his personal prequel, although it is definitely present.
Summary
Gerson (pre-assimilated 4 of 8) is introduced as a Moytite adolescent who is a underage apprentice engineer on a run-down freighter - Jezebel of the Twins - whose normal cargo consists of smelly agricultural byproducts. The story opens with him working to fix the food replicator, only to be pulled away due to a priority alert in the ship's single crew bathroom.

With a backflash, the personal history of Gerson and the clan he belongs to is explained. Many centuries prior, the founder of Gerson's clan - Juruvi Dreng - found a container full of alien music and other items from early mid- to late-20th century Terra. Although it is never said if Juruvi actually believed the music sang of alien gods or if knew a good scam when he saw it, a new religion was created...with Juruvi as the holy leader. By the time Gerson was born, the clan was long under the spell of the alien pantheon; and only an accidental exposure to the outside world allowed Gerson to know that there was more to life than Beatles and King. With that knowledge, Gerson eventually ran away from his clan and took refuge in the first job he could find, that job junior engineer on Jezebel of the Twins.

It soon becomes apparent that Jezebel is more than she appears. Specifically, the old freighter is a small-time smuggler. While the smuggling operation is run solely by the captain and his first mate run the operation, it is likely master engineer Killian suspects (not that he cares). It is during a short-cut to a smuggler's cache that Jezebel develops engine problems...and sees a Borg cube already in-system.

The sighting of the Borg cube brings to light Jezebel's second surprise: her captain and first mate are ex-Borg. Captured and processed into drones many years prior, Captain J and Sir had been rescued from the remains of a Borg moonbase by a Drin Borg Institute vessel. After undergoing the de-Borgification process, the pair had returned to their home system, discovered their officially deceased status, and begun new lives by buying Jezebel of the Twins, with the occasional foray into small-time smuggling.

Gerson is sent hullside to inspect the nacelles. Eventually Captain J and Sir have themselves sedated by the Infirmarymaster in order to block the emerging voices, leaving the rest of the crew alone to try to restart the engines and escape. While on the hull, Gerson comes up with the idea of dropping loads of Jezebel's smelly, and flammable cargo, upon the Borg cube. As by this time the cube has Jezebel in a tractor, there is nothing to lose, and so, one at a time, Gerson manually releases ten cargo loads of very strong fertilizer. One at a time they smash against the cube and are lit on fire.

The Borg cube blows up.

It is the last pylon Gerson inspects that is found to have created the engine troubles. After making the temporary repair, and as he heads back to the airlock, five more Borg cubes arrive. Unfortunately, Jezebel and her crew are out of manure.

The end is predictable...and Gerson is reborn as 4 of 8.
*Sir (Eligni) - first mate, smuggler, ex-military (secuity chief), and ex-Borg
This was the last of the Assimilations mini-series stories that was written. This one was specifically saved for last because I felt that the 'who' behind Captain was very important to ensure it felt correct. I already knew some of the pieces of Captain's past life - In-Laws of Relativity - as well as mention made here and there of his personal history, it was this story where it all came together.

Summary
The fifth story of The Reject's Table round-table of first-time captain stories opens with 4 of 8 awaking to a silent cube. Recently assimilated, he was originally slated to be assigned to the engineering hierarchy. However, due to unforeseen circumstances that left Cube #347 missing several drones, including a member of the Hierarchy of Eight, the drone to be designated 4 of 8 was declared to have the appropriate Captainly mental fortitude and reassigned to Command and Control. Usually the Captaincy is a rotational position among the Hierarchy of Eight, but given the newness of 4 of 8 and the fact that none /like/ to be Captain, records were flubbed, and the newly awake drone finds himself as head babysitter.

As Captain wakes up the cube, he learns that the assignment Cube #347 has been given is to travel to a system which once belonged to a species now extinct outside the Collective. Once there, memory crystals are to be retrieved from a tagged asteroid and returned to BorgSpace proper for analysis.

Few of the drones which fill hierarchy head positions are familiar to the contemporary BorgSpace series. However, of those which are familiar:
*45 of 300 has been transferred aboard at the same time as 4 of 8 and other replacement drones. Once awake, 45 of 300 claims the Weapons position which he will subsequently keep for a long, long time.
*12 of 19 is tapped to head engineering hierarchy. However, she has been in this position for five of the last seven cube assignments. She demands to not be in charge for the next full rotation of Eight, and to emphasize this point she subdesignates herself Omega.
*2 of 20, infamous G'floo! addict and member of the Group of 20, finds himself rotated in to be Assimilation.

When Cube #347 arrives at the target system, it is almost hit by a superstring. The near-miss not only causes moderate damage, but flings the cube into an alternate reality where it encounters the Ferengi-ruled Federation Hegemony in the form of the battle cruiser Rules of Acquisition. Betazoid Empathic Attack Units are threatened; and Cube #347 is attacked, albeit by standard weaponry. Just when it looks bleak, Cube #347 is saved...by Cube #347. Strike-class Cube #347, to be exact.

After contact is made between the sub-collectives, it is learned that the alternate reality arose due to infection of the Borg Collective by an individuality virus carried by a drone designated Hugh, released as a Trojan horse by Jean-Luc Picard. The alternate Cube #347 is not a cube of misfits, but rather an elite sub-collective embodying Oneness. Soon it becomes clear that the superstring system is soon to become a bloody battlefield between Federation and Collective, and that Cube #347 will not be sufficiently repaired to be flung back to its home reality. In an effort to bolster the chance of success by the alternate Collective, the sub-collective of Cube #347 offers to look at the individuality virus and attempt to devise a counter - an individuality virus can't affect those who are already near individuals, after all. Or at least that is the rationalization.

An antivirus is devised, thus allowing the local Collective to have the upper hand, driving away the Federation Hegemony. Hooray! Cube #347 goes home, re-repairs what is broken along the way, and acquires the memory crystals. The end!
Story Notes
The Reject's Table provided me (the BorgSpace author) with the chance to explore Captain's time shortly after assimilation. The BorgSpace series itself occurs long after this primary character has established himself and is confident in his actions. The early Captain is quite a bit different, in that respect, as well as how he presents in the bar, or at least that was my aim.

At this point in the BorgSpace series, I was still settling into writing, and had not quite codified various concepts. For instance, in Captain's Tale, the Doctor character is given the job to take apart the individuality virus. Later in the main BorgSpace series, it becomes well established that such a task would belong to the assimilation hierarchy, not drone maintenance.

Another thing I'll point out is how Babylon 5, a favorite sci-fi series of mine, managed to sneak into this story. Specifically, the "Jovian Sunspot" drink, which was seen in the Babylon 5 episodes of Deathwalker and A Spider in the Web.
Series Synopsis
Far in the back of the famed bar "The Captain's Table" is a cramped little table where those that don't quite measure up to the standards of captaining can pull up a chair and tell their story. "The Reject's Table" is a five-story mini-series written by the four authors of the five Star Traks series in existence in 1998 when the mini-series was written.

Captains Alexander Rydell, Lisa Beck, Andrew Baxter, Jad Vorezze and 4 of 8 visited The Captain's Table bar and were directed to a crappy table in a rear corner by the bathrooms. The five captains told stories of their first command experiences while fending off the unwanted attentions of Redbeard the Pirate and dealing with various incarnations of James T. Kirk. None of the captains retained a memory of their visit once they left the bar.

Series Status
This series is complete.

Series Notes
The Reject's Table was based on "The Captain's Table" line of Star Trek novels published by Pocket Books. "The Captain's Table" concept was created by John J. Ordover and Dean Wesley Smith.

While the series is complete, there has been some talk of having another round of Reject's Tables stories, since several Traks captains have come along since 1998.

"The Hawkins Incident" is the first story in the Next Federation Arc.
Pre-assimilation life
The drone unit currently designated "4 of 8" was originally named Gerson. He was born on the Moytite homeworld as a member of Clan Dreng. Clan Dreng was unusual in that it was an odd sect worshiping rock-and-roll idols from Terra's mid- to late-20th century; and it was only a chance exposure to the "real world" and non-Terran music which made Gerson realize that there was a wider universe beyond the clan nest. After fleeing his clan, Gerson lied about his age and enlisted as an apprentice engineer upon a disintegrating tramp freighter by the name Jezebel of the Twins. The vessel was captured by the Borg and her crew, including Gerson, assimilated. 1 2 3
(From Encyclopedia entry - clean and update)

Also, I believe I have a longer formal designation somewhere....

4 of 8, as with the other in the Hierarchy of Eight when it is their turn, does not like the position of Captain, but he doesn't have much say in the matter.

4 of 8 spent 6 months in a maturation chamber following his initial assimilation and processing. (REF) During his first rotation into the Captaincy, Cube #347 was transported to an alternate universe where the Ferrengi-controlled Federation Hegemony was on the verge of wiping out the final resistance to their ultra-capitalistic empire. His assistance (and that of the sub-collective) allowed the Borg opposition to prevail in a key battle. 3

The nodal intersection Captain frequents (and his alcove) are located in subsection 17, submatrix 10 ("Cube #347's Excellent Adventure, Part II"; "When Borg Attack" [BRG]). The intersection sports a very non BorgStandard viewscreen, which he picked up and installed ("The Only Certainty in Life is Borg and Taxes" [BRG]) because he really does not like raw sensor data 3 ("This is Borg"; "The Only Certainty in Life is Borg and Taxes" [BRG]).

As far as things he does like, "Jumba the Wise Lizard" novels top the list ("The Only Certainty in Life is Borg and Taxes"; "A Fish Story" [BRG]). Captain's most recent rotation has more full of incidents than usual.

He has been kidnapped several times; by his biological family ("In-Laws of Relativity" [BRG]), by the diety of species #8511, Ghari ("A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste" [BRG]), and was one of the first on Cube #347 to be bandersnatched ("Of Jabberwock, Jubjub Birds, and Bandersnatch" [BRG]). The entire Collective was controlled by Captain for several hours due to a mix-up, after which he was a special guest interviewee on the Federation's premier talk show, The Zyrian Hour ("Drag Queen" [BRG]).

It has been noted that much of Captain's left side is cybernized ("Bringing Up Baby"; "Me, Myself, and I" [BRG]).

The current rotation has been no picnic when it comes to personal safety and health. Captain has suffered massive implant rejection due to malfunctioning nanoprobes ("Please State the Nature of the Medical Emergency" [BRG]), been set as bait to capture a rogue drone which subsequently attacked him before being brought under control ("Bringing Up Baby" [BRG]), and been assaulted by a Luplup brooder, both in the dataspaces and physically ("How Much Is That Doggy In The Window?" [BRG]; "Dog Days of Summer" [BRG]). Other incidents which have occurred include meeting an alternate self while in an alternate reality ("Captain's Tale" [REJ]), being split (along with the rest of Cube #347) into perfect/very unperfect drone ("Two Much of a Good Thing" [BRG]), and acting as a liaison between the sub-collective and the Banshee crew when the latter managed to transport themselves on board and fling the entire package eight thousand years to the past ("Cube #347's Excellent Adventure" Part II-III [BRG]).

Series Synopsis
All Borg are created (or rather, assimilated) equal - that's the story the Collective wants you to believe. The truth is more complicated - sometimes when assimilated, a drone retains a part of its original personality. Otherwise, the drone is fine and functional - discarding it would be a waste. But "Borg with Personality" isn't exactly Perfection either. So, the Collective put all those square pegs into one cube, keeping it at arm's length, and sends it on low-priority tasks. Imagine you're in a madhouse where you don't only hear voices, those voices are also not necessarily your own. Welcome to Exploratory Cube #347.
Author's Series Notes
Some sort of introduction here about each season and story has its own notes as well, but this is for the entire BorgSpace concept

What I liked about the idea of Cube #347 (and still do at the time of this wiki entry) is that they are essentially villains. The sub-collective of Cube #347 are not nice people. Writing villains is difficult, not least of all because you can't let them win. Not in the end, anyway, because if the Cube #347 crew always won (as opposed to muddling their way through what the universe throws at them), then everyone would be assimilated and the series would have been very short.

Another thing I immediately found hard when I began writing BorgSpace, and still do many years and many stories later, was the problem of not making my erstwhile villains too powerful. In Star Trek cannon, the Borg area about the biggest, baddest thing around (give or take the occasional extra-dimensional three-legged alien or Jean-Luc Picard's intuition). Knowing when and when not to use the powerful nature of the Borg has been another challenge. However, sometimes one just has to break out the disruptors and unleash one's internal Weapons.

I one major problem with writing BorgSpace has been the lack of ability to focus on interpersonal relationships. That is just an arena that does not exist within the Collective. Oh, there are 'quasi-relationships' in the form of the antagonism between Weapons and Delta, or the sarcastic foil of Second, but nothing 'deep', per se. I've tried to compensate over the years by purposefully including at least one story per season that focuses on a single character to try to expand and grow their inner-self, but the fundamental reality is that true emotions like 'love' or 'hate' have to be consciously censored when I write stories that focus on the sub-collective.
