Dr. John Smith was a scientist who was able to convince Commodore Scott Enwright to arrange passage for him to the spatial anomaly known as The Well on the SS Clydesdale. In actually, Smith was from another universe and used the Clydesdale to retrieve his own transport, which he'd lost when he was stranded in our universe, and then return to his own.
