Everybody sing along! Who are the Romulans in your neighborhood? In your neighborhood. In your neigh-bor-hood! Actually Wuddle doesn't want to know. He just wants them to leave.
Summary
Dr. Amedon Nelson and Frequoq Wuddle are on their way back to Waystation after four days away together. Nelson is frustrated that Wuddle refuses to take her back to Multos, but he says that she cannot visit until the Grand Opening when they will open for business to the rest of the galaxy. They are buzzed by a Romulan scout ship. Since relations with the Romulans have been good, Dr. Nelson doesn't see anything to worry about. On his way back to Multos after dropping Nelson off at Waystation, Wuddle is again buzzed by the Romulans. This time, they hail him and tell him that he is in their space. They have claimed Edgeworld as their own and established a colony there. Wuddle turns around and heads straight back to Waystation.
He meets with Captain Lisa Beck, who tells him that the Romulans are probably just trying to get a foothold in the region, since the Federation has been expanding into the Beta Quadrant. She also tells Wuddle not to call in the Multek fleet because the Romulans may use that provocation as an excuse to take over the entire Multek Enclave. Beck will try and deal with the situation through diplomatic channels. This doesn't go well. The Romulan Ambassador has no interest in giving the planet back and informs Beck that the Romulans will obliterate the Multeks if the Multeks try to retake Edgeworld. When Admiral Leelan Fonn finds out that she contacted the Romulan Ambassador, he makes Beck promise that she will not get involved. He does not want a situation with the Romulans on his hands. Beck follows the order to the letter. She does not get involved. Instead, she goes to find Commander Walter Morales, who is having breakfast with Stephanie Hodges. She tells Morales that she is not getting involved but that if someone else were to get involved, that someone would have to make sure that the Federation was not implicated in whatever actions were taken. Furthermore, she has decided that the station's junior officers haven't been getting enough command experience, so she is giving her command crew a few days off. Message delivered, she leaves Morales to figure out what the heck he's going to do to get rid of the Romulans.
With Morales, Lieutenant Commander Craig Porter, Lieutenant Commander Sean Russell and Dr. Nelson disguised as Multeks, Wuddle flies them all back to Edgeworld in his ship, where they request a diplomatic meeting with the Romulans. Commander Brella agrees to meet with them. It's not much of a meeting, though. Brella reiterates the fact that they won't be getting their planet back. Otherwise she spends most of the time sneezing due to the lorbeldolis flowers that have bloomed on Edgeworld or being accosted by the massage robots that work in the hotel that the Multeks had previously built there. Porter takes one of the massage bots off of her hands. Brella does tell them that while only 15 Romulans are on Edgeworld currently, a full colony ship will be arriving in two days.
Morales, Porter, Russell, Dr. Nelson, and Wuddle return to Waystation to work out a plan. Dr. Nelson and Russell take the Wayward to intercept the colony ship, while Morales, after learning that the massage robots are made by an automated industrial replicator, has Wuddle order a Multek military vessel meet them inside the Multek Enclave. Dr. Nelson tells the commander of the colony ship that, due to their course to the station, she needs to check everyone on board for Gerafelian Mumps. Since Gerafelian Mumps are not to be trifled with and in the interest in Romulan/Federation relations, the captain agrees. Morales has the Multek military ship hover right inside the edge of the Romulan scout ship's sensor range. The scout ship pilot, believing that they are being spied upon races over to confront the Multeks. With the scout ship gone, Morales, Porter, and Wuddle move in using Wuddle's ship. Porter remotely takes control of the Multek resort's central computer. He opens up the resort's vents, allowing the flower pollen from outside to stream into the formerly-sealed environment and also has the robot fabricator system start spitting out massage bots. Those two problems combined are enough to send the Romulans fleeing from the planet.
As Nelson is finishing up her work on the colony ship, the scout ship races up to them, and Commander Brella insists that they have to find another planet for their colony. The colony ship captain agrees. Back on Waystation, Beck congratulates her crew on a job well done. Before Wuddle leaves for Multos, he proposes to Dr. Nelson, who eagerly agrees.
