A bolt from above is heading right in Captain Lisa Beck's direction..."above" meaning Starfleet, of course. Meanwhile, a mysterious alien race has designs of their own on our fair captain.

Summary

At the request of Yeoman Tina Jones, Lieutenant Commanders Craig Porter and Sean Russell are examining a load of Piranthi relics that have arrived at the station to be auctioned off. Jones' suspicions were raised when the Piranthi contacted her about the auction, and they were very insistent that the auction had to take place on Waystation on a particular day at a particular time. She is worried that it's a cover for some kind of attack. After Captain Lisa Beck learns about the artifact situation, she receives a comm from Admiral Thomas Wagner giving her unexpected and unpleasant news: Admiral Leelan Fonn will be taking over as commanding officer of Waystation. Wagner tells Beck to consider a transfer because if she stays on the station, she'll basically be Fonn's secretary. As Porter discovers a rock among the Piranthi artifacts that is leeching chroniton radiation, Beck calls a staff meeting. Porter confiscates the rock.

At the staff meeting, Beck informs the command crew of Fonn's impending arrival and then sends out a message to the station. Mr. Auditmi, the acting-CEO of Dillon Enterprises, gives the news to Bradley Dillon, who is traveling on the USS Explorer. Bradley is not pleased at this turn of event, and, while he cannot act directly, he more than hints that Auditmi should do something about it. Beck, meanwhile, decides to stay away from Ops and other heavily-populated areas for a while. She just doesn't want to deal with the questions and the supportive comments. She goes to Science Lab Two to check on the rock Porter found. While she is holding a rock, an accident occurs in the lab that sends Beck back in time to Piranthi in the past. She drops the rock, which has started glowing, and manages to say "When I get back to Waystation, I am going to have some words for..." when she is suddenly back in the science lab. Beck is not pleased that a potentially-dangerous time-traveling rock was brought aboard her station and goes to the auditorium where the auction is to be held to let the Piranthi know just how unhappy she is. She demands to know who's in charge. The Piranthi tell her that she is and that the rock was destined for her just as she was destined to impart the words to them. Porter pieces together what has happened. When Beck went back into Piranthi's past and said, "When I get back to Waystation, I am going to have some words for..." she inadvertently started a religion. The followers have come to Waystation to receive her promised words. Beck stalls for time and goes off to figure out just what the hell she's going to say.

Auditmi contacts Fleet Admiral Nosira Ra'al and asks her to recall Admiral Fonn as a favor to Bradley Dillon. Ra'al refuses. Beck isn't getting anywhere with her speech for the Piranthi. Commander Walter Morales suggests that she should just give them her philosophy using quotes from other people, if that helps. Beck starts digging around trying to find words that express what she believes in. A short time later, Beck delivers her words of wisdom. The Piranthi are a bit disappointed. They were hoping that she had a grand quest for them. Fortunately, their entire cult numbers 56 people, so there aren't too many of them to be disappointed.

Admiral Fonn arrives, and, after Auditmi makes a last-ditch attempt to get the admiral to leave, Fonn asks to meet with Beck privately. In her office he tells her that he has absolutely no interest in running the station. He's had a long career, and he's tired. He just wants to sit back and relax for the next three years until he retires. Since the Multeks have opened up to the Federation, the Collectors have disbanded, and President Dillon is away, Waystation seemed like the perfect place to lay low. He wants Beck to pretend that he's not even there. A relieved Beck agrees and takes Fonn out for a beer.
