Redshirts

Low ranking security officers or other crewmembers assigned to Starfleet vessels. Named Redshirts after the initial uniform coloration of the early Starfleet vessels circa 2266 - 2273.

Redshirts have been assigned as Landing party members since the beginning of Starfleet "Away" missions for their usefullness as targets for Alien marksmen, or other entities which would seek to bestow harm upon the main body of any landing party. Dressed in red, they seem totally unaware of their status as "moving targets" or even "dead men walking".
