Captain Reimann and his crew have just arrived on board when a crisis presents itself. What is happening on board? Who or what killed everyone? Will it kill Reimann and Co?
Summary
The Nuabgar Nebula has run amok on the S.S. Hansean, killing most of the crew while trying to be friends with them. Nyoko Sulu (under the name Nyoko Chugoku) and Giuseppi Lombardo arrive on board. The senior crewmembers, kept safe and unaware in the holodeck, emerge to find many of the crew dead, and attempt to capture the Nebula. They are finally successful in doing so, but are unable to hold it for long. The nebula accesses the ship's database, coming across the Legend of Tobacco, and transports itself to the Taklamakan Desert in order to find more friends.
Reimann and Sulu beam down to the planet, closely followed by Leanne Braistway and Soledad Sanchez Rios. The nebula heads towards the synthebacco plantation at Kucha, and the village is evacuated by Reimann, who lays a trap for the nebula. The Nebula evades the trap, while on board the Hansean the Kucha villagers keep the crew occupied. One of them, a small boy, escapes and gains access to the bridge, where Giuseppi Lombardo is distracted by the bridge's Disco mode. The boy fires a neutron torpedo at Kucha, destroying the village and almost killing those on the planet below. Annoyed, Reimann captures the nebula.
The nebula is declared a sentient being and returned to where it was originally found, and the Hansean is ready to depart. As the previous Chief Engineer was killed by the nebula, Reimann offers Nyoko the position, and she gladly accepts.
Reimann finishes with the credits voice-over.

"Space. The final delivery. This is the mission of the Starship Hansean: to deliver it's cargo, find new races and new civilisations, and get them to buy Dillon Consortium merchandise. And above all, to ensure our shareholders get results, and damn the competition. Full speed ahead, to the future that awaits us, let the voyages commence."

Author's Comments
To pick up on something else I think Alan said in the Governor's Song thread, he commented on how both series kept the same story line going for the first few episodes. At my end of things I can blame it entirely on the irreplaceable Anthony Butler. He was kind enough to read an early draft of this episode sometime back at which time it was planned as just one episode. He suggested making it into a two-parter and even suggested the end of the Holodeck training as the place to put it. I saw his wisdom and extending the story, nearly doubling it in length, and played around with cut-off points seeking the best cliff-hangar. I tried several places, but once again Mr. Butler was correct and well, the rest is history.
About the dangers of the crew being too Starfleet-ish. I think there is bound to be some similarities simply due to the fact that they're both starship crews, but also as a writer my 'default' is to write Starfleet and I have to be careful I don't slip into this. As well it's actually been quite hard to find stuff on non-military ship crews (even the two non-Starfleet Traks series deal essentially with a military ship), the little I've found dealing with the Hanseatic League (after which the ship is named) and the East India Trading Company. Anyway, as the series goes on the Dillon's structure of the crew should become better defined, especially in the next story where, among other things, the crew of the Hansean come up against a Starfleet ship.
And speaking of Starfleet, in very early drafts of the series and this episode it dealt with a Starfleet ship. However once I had the idea to situate the crew both in the 26th century and on a Dillon's ship everything fell into place must better. Also speaking of early drafts, Leanne Braistway was actually a man named Lance, but women just make better bitches (no offense meant to those of the female pursuasion, but it's true). Flash was also only the Ops officer with a different character taking care of Security. However I thought the ship was too full so this character was scrapped. He was pretty interesting though, maybe he'll crop up in the future sometime.
In each of the two stories I've included references to other sci-fi. In the first story The White Hart is the creation of Arthur C. Clarke and forms the venue for perhaps my favourite series of short stories. While I'd suggest reading anything by him, if you're looking for something light and humorous to read I'd strongly suggest Tales From the White Hart. However the reference in the second story is a bit more hidden. At one point Reimann comments to Nyoko “Yes, yes it is. Reminds me of when I was an Crewman on the Star Wolf under Captain Parsons…”. These are references to the Star Wolf series by David Gerrold. Anyway, always nice to throw in a couple of your inspirations into stories.
