Klaus Reimann, Captain of an old re-commissioned vessel, is to gain command of a new state of the art starship. Arriving to find the ship in the final stages of construction, Reimann begins with a simple enough task: get the senior officers together and get them to work successfully as a unit. But his plans are interrupted when an unknown menace threatens the ship: one which Reimann may have brought with him.

Summary

Nyoko Sulu is taking her final exams at Fed U, gaining average marks on purpose in order to avoid joining Starfleet, as per he family's wishes. However this isn't enough to distract her parents goal of having yet another Sulu in Starfleet, so she decides to run away, joining the Dillon Consortium Logistics Divison at their base in Riga Spaceport. Having changed her name to Nyoko Chugoku, she is interviewed by Captain Rogerio who plans to leave Earth in two months. This isn't quick enough for Nyoko, so Rogerio transfers her to a ship that'll be leaving sooner.

Meanwhile Klaus Reimann, Captain of a refitted Aurora class starship, is informed that he is being transferred to a new command: the S.S. Hansean. Designed as the Consortium's flagship, it is finishing construction in Earth Orbit. The Spallanzani returns Reimann to Earth, but before he leaves the crew presents him with part of the Naibger Nebula, the ship's last object of study. On Earth Reimann's estranged wife, Soledad Sanchez Rios, is the Head of the Dillon Consortium's Accounting Division. She leaves their brand new building in Salisbury, England, returning later to find that the building has burnt down in an accident. Rather than building a new complex to house the Accounting Division the Consortium decides to streamline the service by assigning accountants to each individual freight ship, keeping the HQ on board the Consortium's new flagship.

On board the Hansean the crew is slowly coming together. Upon Reimann's arrival he expains to the senior crew that their initial mission is to particupate in a team building exercise, camping overnight on a holodeck program. The only senior crewman not involved is Chief Engineer Ness, who is excused in order to finish fitting out the ship. Sanchez arrives on board, only then finding out that she has been assigned to the ship commanded by her ex-husband. Reluctantly she agrees to join the team building exercise. While the exercise on the holodeck is in progress, the specimen of the Naibger Nebula given to Reimann as a gift turns out to be sentient, breaks free and explores the ship in order to find friends. Unfortunately any time the nebula tries to make a friend it accidentally kills them. The team bonding exercise finishes, releasing the senior crewman onto a ghost ship...
