Born into the Sulu family Nyoko was expected to follow in the family footsteps and join Starfleet, though she was dead set against it. Despite gaining average marks in her Engineering degree from Federation University her parents Saruwatari and Ayumi Sulu remained convinced her daughter was to join Starfleet.

In order to escape this Nyoko ran away from home, changing her name to Nyoko Chugoku and joining the Dillon Consortium's Logistics Division at the Riga Spacestation. Initially interviewed by Captain Rogerio, Nyoko's desire to escape Earth quickly led to her being assignd as a Crewman to the soon departing S.S. Hansean. Upon arrival she saved Captain Klaus Reimann from the over-friendly Nuabgar Nebula, and later helped capture it in the Taklamakan Desert. Despite her youth and inexperience Reimann offered her the position of Chief Engineer thanks to her performance during the crisis and the death of the previous chief, Ness, at the hands of the Nebula (The Incongruous Arrival, Out For A Smoke [IV]).

Nyoko was able to easily form friendships on board, the only exception being that of the rapidly developing enmity with first mate Leanne Braistway (United Colours of Cardassia [IV]), a relationship that would eventually come to open hostility towards each other. On board the Hansean Nyoko quickly showed her talents as an extraordinary engineer when motivated. Despite a severely depleted Engineering crew she has managed to keep the ship in working order. When the Hansean was crippled by an EMP weapon on Stardate 178712 she was able to repair several power packs and construct a radio transmitter from scratch, the two vital in repelling a pirate attack and calling for help that arrived in the form of the USS Misacmos (Babel Talk [IV]). When Dr. Pendrick Baxter came aboard the Hansean she was the first to work out that he was up to trouble and tried to stop him. Unfortunately she was knocked out by the Second Coming of Chuck Norris, who was in turn subdued by Braistway and Soledad Sanchez Rios (Jabobo 2.0 [IV]).
