Dr. Elizabeth Aldridge's patient turns out not to be quite as dead as she had originally thought.

Summary

The USS Secondprize is visiting the planet Aronel to host an awards dinner honoring the scientific achievements of Dr. Yelpres when the guest of honor ends up dead. He died of natural causes, but Dr. Aldridge is still excited to have a chance to perform an autopsy...at least until the corpse disappears from sickbay. It turns out that Yelpres had a chip installed in his head containing massive amount of data that he could access with a thought. The chip, which had its own artificial intelligence, now has control of Yelpres' body and isn't too keen on the idea of giving it back to the Aronel for the funeral, particularly since said funeral ends with a cremation. The Aronel steal the body back, taking the decision of whether or not to give the artificial being, who calls himself "Chip," asylum out of Captain Alexander Rydell's hands. Dr. Aldridge comes up with a plan. While Rydell stalls the Aronel to buy Aldridge time (eventually breaking into a lounge act), Aldridge constructs an artifical corpse, which she swaps for Chip. The Aronel burn the body, and the Secondprize takes Chip to Deep Space Eleven to start a new life...or death...or something.

Author's Comments

All of the alien names in this story (Aronel, Prime Minister Veltvis, Dr. Yelpres) are all plays on Elvis Aron Presley. Veltvis, a mashing of velvet Elvis, is probably the worst of the bunch.
