After she, Commander Travis Dillon, and Lieutenant Commander Jaroch are captured on an away mission, Counselor Claire Webber must face a creature so hideous that it has a whole tribe of warriors running scared. Somehow, it doesn't seem like hugs are going to do the job on this one.

Summary

Webber, Dillon, and Jaroch are sent to make contact with the Oloni, a primitive tribe residing on a moon of Kynax, a Federation world. The Kynaxins plan to colonize the moon and want to co-exist with the Oloni, but every representative they have sent to meet with the tribe has been killed. The Oloni live in two villages, one female and one male, and only co-mingle at ceremonies twice a year. The away team arrives at the female village and are immediately captured. As males, Jaroch and Dillon are sentenced to death and locked away while Webber is given the opportunity to state her case to the Chieftess. Webber explains why she is there and that the Kynaxins can improve the Oloni's way of life. The Chieftess is impressed with Webber's passion and states that she will follow Webber's suggestion to listen to the Kynaxins and to release Jaroch and Dillon if Webber can hunt down the Stuyluppo and return with it. The Chieftess describes the Stuyluppo as a vicious killer with a blood-curdling howl that can be heard for miles. Webber is given a spear and shoved off into the forest to find the Stuyluppo. Seeing this, Dillon contacts the USS Secondprize and calls for beam out. Jaroch is transported back to the ship, but Captain Rydell insists that Dillon remain to see to Webber's safety.

Webber travels through the forest, encountering a lewd talking flower and hugging trees along the way. Finally she finds the Stuyluppo, which is actually a massive space-faring creature named Jonil. Jonil crashed on the moon after being suched through a wormhole, and, due to the moon's gravity, he cannot leave. He can, however, move along the surface. Webber convinces him to return to the Oloni village with her. Jonil remains hidden on the outskirts as Webber enters with the talking flower. On cue, the flower (which was bribed with the promise of a kiss from Webber) pretends to howl while Jonil makes the actual noise from his hiding place in the forest. The Chieftess believes that they have been fooled all of this time by a loud flower and realizes that there are things they could learn from outsiders. Dillon is released, and he, Webber, and Jonil return to the Secondprize.
