Is Lieutenant Monica Vaughn experiencing a bout of job dissatisfaction? Can Emily Sullivan snap her out of it? Why do I ask so many questions?
Summary
Lieutenant Monica Vaughn's friendship with Lieutenant Commander Emily Sullivan has frayed to the breaking point due to Sullivan's marriage to Commander Scott Baird and her quick rise up the ranks. After Sullivan's attempt to have lunch with Vaughn ends in a fight, Sullivan goes to see Captain Alexander Rydell about getting Vaughn promoted, which, of course, he can't do. Sullivan attempts to heal the rift by taking lunch to Vaughn and apologzing for being so distant since her marriage. Vaughn suggests that the two take a trip together, which Sullivan is hesitant about due to Baird. Vaughn solves the problem by putting Baird in the transport buffer.
Before Vaughn and Sullivan can leave, the USS Secondprize is thrown into a crisis. Dr. Pevzin, a scientist they are transporting, has developed a device called the Protilator using Dominion technology obtained during the war. Unsure as to what his so-called invention actually does (he used it to get a grant and a free trip to Argelius), Pevzin attaches the Protilator to the Secondprize's warp core and activates it. One blinding flash of light later, the Secondprize is floating in three pieces and heading toward a warp core breach. Since Baird is trapped in the transport buffer, Vaughn and Sullivan race to Engineering, and Vaughn is able to avert the breach by shutting down the core. Now the Protilator is without power, which they need to put the ship together. Vaughn and Sullivan exit the ship on the Runabout USS Chattahoochee and use its core to power the device. After an hour of careful manipulation, Vaughn is able to figure out the device and put the Secondprize back together. In recognition of her actions saving the ship, Rydell promotes Vaughn to Lieutenant Commander and makes her Assistant Chief Engineer.
