Dr. Amedon Nelson is off for a romantic rendezvous with Frequoq Wuddle of the Multeks. Unfortunately for Commander Walter Morales, he has to play chauffeur. Unfortunately for all of them, trips to Multek space rarely go smoothly.

Summary

Much to Commander Walter Morales' delight (that's sarcasm, folks), he is assigned to transport Dr. Amedon Nelson to Balibeb, a Multek resort planet, where, disguised as a Multek, she will be spending a few days with Frequoq Wuddle. On the trip to Balibeb, Morales and Wuddle discuss Morales' unreturned feelings for Captain Lisa Beck, Beck's growing relationship with Phillip Harper, and the fact that Nelson has not told Wuddle that she is joined with a symbiont. Arriving at Balibeb, Wuddle and Nelson go to the Cryjalia resort, known for its therapeutic hot springs. Thanks to Wuddle's position, he and Nelson have the resort to themselves. Nelson also learns that the Frequoq's consort has an official title, Snarkleberry. She's less than thrilled at the title or at the thought of being a consort.

To hide the Frequoq's visit, the resort publicizes the story that they are closed for internal maintenance, which draws the attention of a group of Multeks who have an issue with the resort owner, Tedula. Tedula's resort uses technology developed by Sutto, who doesn't feel that he was properly compensated. Sutto transports into the resort with three Multeks determined to get recompense from Tedula. He is surprised to see that there are actually guests present, but determines to hold Wuddle and Nelson, so they can't tell anyone what is happening at the resort. Realizing that he has the Frequoq, Sutto says that his demands are going to be steep. The fourth member of Sutto's team, Garbitz, who stayed on their ship, spots the runabout, which Morales parked on the surface of Balibeb. He beams down to investigate and jumps Morales. As Nelson's Unlogi begins to wear off, putting her symbiosis with Midon at risk, she realizes that Wuddle is acting strangely. Tedula had hypnotized him while he and Nelson were having a spa treatment, but now her plans to become Wuddle's Snarkleberry have been destroyed by the arrival of Sutto. Tedula's employee, Meppla, reveals himself to be with the Multek Board of Tourism, who had been at the resort undercover to investigate Tedula's business practices. Soon, Sutto and friends, Tedula, and Meppla are all pointing weapons at each other, with Nelson and the hypnotized Wuddle caught in the middle.

Morales convinces Garbitz that he's actually a disguised Multek test pilot and that the runabout is a secret government craft. Garbitz tries his hand at flying the runabout as Morales tempts him with an offer of becoming a test pilot as well. All he has to do is go to their secret space station. As Garbitz steers the runabout toward Waystation, Nelson's condition deteriorates, and two armed Multek soldiers beam into the resort. At Waystation, Morales has Garbitz beamed directly a holodeck full of simulated Multeks, then races back to Balibeb to check on Nelson.

Nelson snaps, grabs a weapon from one of the newly-arrived soldiers, and starts firing. The situation ignites as everyone else begins shooting as well. Nelson grabs Wuddle and gets him to cover. Morales arrives in the runabout, smashes through the resort roof, and hits the entire room with a wide-dispersal stun beam. Tedula wakes up in a cell, Garbitz wakes up on his ship believing that everything he'd just experienced was a dream, and he, Sutto, and one of Sutto's other followers are taken into custody by the Multek authorities for threatening the Frequoq and, more seriously, impeding tourism. Sutto's fourth man, Crubbie, wakes up in the presence of the Frequoq. Over the course of events, Crubbie was revealed to be the genius who actually created much of Tedula's relaxation equipment while he was working for Sutto. He also was uncomfortable with Sutto's actions and refused to carry a weapon. Wuddle offers him ownership of the resort, which he gratefully accepts. Wuddle and Nelson decide that their future dates will be on Waystation.
