It's Reginald and Rosalyn Bain's anniversary, and they're about to take a lovely trip courtesy of Section 31. Anyone here REALLY believe this is going to go smoothly? We didn't think so. Romance and carnage go hand in hand in "Vacation 31."
Summary
While on a mission for Section 31, Rosalyn Bain realizes that she forgot her 44th wedding anniversary. She remembers this while hanging off a cliff on Nartoth after hand-to-hand combat with the Orion environmental activist Thoblo didn’t quite go her way. She is able to grab Thoblo and send him plummeting off the cliff, but she still is faced with the problem of figuring out what to do about her anniversary.
The USS Anomaly has docked at Femius Three to have a sweep to deal with a particularly nasty infestation of what are basically space gerbils. The crew will need to be off the ship for four days, which works well for Captain Reginald Bain’s wedding anniversary. But he hasn’t been able to reach his wife Rosalyn. Worried, Lieutenant Commander Tovar contacts her and finds out that she is fine and on her way to join them at Femius Three.
Once she arrives, Rosalyn and Bain leave on the Raceabout USS Titicaca for their anniversary trip to the beach house Rosalyn reserved for them on Gulfbreeza. Said beach house is actually a Section 31 safe house on a world that didn’t appear on any star charts. Rosalyn had “inoculated” Bain on the way there, which gave him the genetic marker he needed to go to the surface and made him detectable to Rosalyn from four sectors away.
Despite all of Section 31’s precautions, Rosalyn hears a man’s voice while she is reading in their beachside cabin. The speaker identifies himself as one of Thoblo’s associates, and he tells Rosalyn to get Botanical Retrovirus he and Thoblo planned to unleash on the worlds of the Federation back from Section 31 or he will kill Bain. As a show that he’s serious, he sends a massive wave at Bain, who is outside, smashing the captain against the beach and burying him in sand. Rosalyn races outside and digs him out, saying that they need to leave because obviously this beach isn’t safe. Bain protests, but Rosalyn insists that they go to Risa Six instead. She hears the voice again, but Bain doesn’t. She realizes the speaker is somehow tuned just to her auditory wavelengths.
She goes inside to the bathroom to talk to the speaker, who identifies himself as General Warder. He won’t reveal how he found Rosalyn on Gulfbreeza except to say that he called in some favors. He again orders Rosalyn to get him the virus, or he will kill her and Bain. She goes back outside and has Bain call the Titicaca, which then plummets into their beach house leave both it and the house a pile of smoldering rubble. Bain is sure foul play is involved, and he tries unsuccessfully to reach the Anomaly with a transmitter that he brought. Rosalyn wants to go hide in the nearby caves, but Bain refuses, determined to face whomever is fouling up their anniversary trip. Rosalyn knocks Bain out and drags him to the caves.
Leaving Bain there, she heads back out to face Warder, who is trying to locate her in his cloaked ship. The mountains containing the caves are made of bekkarite, which masks her from the Orions’ sensors as long as she’s not moving. Frustrated, Warder beams down to locate Rosalyn himself. She gets the drop on Warder, but he reveals that he has had Bain beamed up to his ship. Hearing that, Rosalyn agrees to get the retrovirus for Warder, who has them both transported back up to his ship. Warder is amused that Bain doesn’t know the truth about Rosalyn’s work for Section 31, but he doesn’t reveal her secret.
Rosalyn has Warder lay in a course. Bain, meanwhile, is talking to Warder’s follower, Imelda, who is holding a weapon on him. Bain concludes that they are going to try and use him to get to Admiral Kristen Larkin. An explosion suddenly rocks the ship, and Bain takes the opportunity to knock Imelda out. In the cockpit, Rosalyn, who caused the explosion in the first place, attacks Warder. Bain comes to help, but she doesn’t realize it’s him and knocks him out before taking our Warder.
Rosalyn and Bain take Warder and Imelda to the authorities on Starbase 920. Bain is sorry that Rosalyn had to get mixed up in the whole affair.
Back on the Anomaly, Tovar tells Bain and Rosalyn that they were lucky. She leaves for the bridge, and Rosalyn gets ready to put in a report to Section 31 as Bain heads to the bedroom. She decides the report can wait until morning and goes to join her husband.
