Tovar was a Yynsian and the tactical officer on the USS Anomaly.

Around the time of Tovar's birth, Jaroch was killed while away from the home he shared with Patricia Hawkins on the Bak'u Homeworld. Finding his lifeforce in the Past Life Clearing House, Jaroch interloped on the next available Yynsian birth, which was Tovar. As such, Tovar grew up with two lifeforces vying for control inside of him.

Tovar spent most of his childhood with his grandparents until they were killed in an unfortunate lava skiing accident when he was eleven.

The following year, Tovar's parents, Tanta and Jimsok disappeared along with the entire Multek Enclave. Tovar was attending a Starfleet camp at the time on Waystation Prime, where he met Reginald Bain. Bain took to Tovar and adopted him after his parents vanished.

Shortly before he left for Starfleet Academy, Tovar learned that his adopted mother, Rosalyn Bain, was actually a Section 31 agent.

Tovar helped Rosalyn prevent Captain Bain from being killed by a holographic assassin hired by Thot-Phul while the Anomaly was at the Breen homeworld for peace talks. (Mrs. Bain, You're Needed [BG])

When the Anomaly was sent to the Andromeda Galaxy, one of Tovar's past lives took control of him insisting that they were going the wrong way. While controlled by this past life, Tovar threatened several engineering officers and demanded that they turn the ship around. He was sedated by a well-thrown hyprospray from Nurse Ih'vik. Tovar awoke with no memory of the incident. (Do You Have Anything To Declare? [BG])

After the Anomaly was heavily damaged and stranded in Andromeda, Tovar went with Dr. Natalia Kasyov aboard the raceabout USS Caspian to try to find Cabral, who had been forcibly removed from the ship by the Associates. He and Kasyov went to see Gyjik, the owner of Gyjik's Galaxy Gateway but were prevented from seeing him by his secretary Moklok. Kasyov convinced Moklok that Tovar was attracted to the squidoid being, and while Moklok turned her amorous attention to Tovar, Kasyov was able to slip in to Gyjik's office to speak to him. Upon leaving Gyjik's, their raceabout was intercepted by the Associates, who took Tovar and Kasyov with the intent of studying them in an experiment. (Yes, We Do Indeed Have Something To Declare! [BG])

In the experiment, Tovar and Kasyov were to live as husband and wife. Kasyov was given a job at a testing facility, but most of what she did involved tasting various jam. Tovar, meanwhile, was assigned to be a homemaker, a task simplified by his Tarva and Toflay past lives. Kasyov met Balpar who introduced her to another disembodied brain, and the group plotted to escape. Before they could put a plan into action, Tovar attacked the testing facility with a device constructed by his past life Totap. The Anomaly arrived in the chaos and rescued Kasyov and Tovar. Tovar learns that he is now pregnant from his encounter with Moklok and carrying hundreds of little squidlings in what he thought was a rash. (Domestic Tranquility [BG])

After the Emergency Diplomatic Hologram incapacitated most of the crew and started attacking the Associates, Tovar worked with the Steve! hologram to blow up the Anomaly's primary holographic junction, which disabled all holograms on the ship. (Transparent Motives [BG])

While the Anomaly was rescuing Cabral from an Associates space station, Tovar was giving birth, the stress of which caused him to lose control of his past lives. Moklok arrived just in time, thanks to hitching a ride with the Lackinis, and took all of the squid babies away, saying that Tovar was too unstable to be a parent. On the return voyage to the Federation, Tovar's past lives continued to intrude until finally once they were back in the Milky Way, they took Tovar over completely and went to the Anomaly's bridge with a bomb demanding that Bain take them "the right way." (Disassociation [BG])

Bain and Commander Prosak were able to subdue Tovar, and they took him to Yyns to see the Polems at the Temple Of Mi Clane, who determined that Tovar had an Interloper, which they would remove and destroy with the Holnym ritual. Tovar convinced Bain to help the Interloper instead, and, leaving Yyns and avoiding capture by a Yynsian fleet, the Interloper led them to the Ba'Ku homeworld, where Patricia Hawkins now lived. With the help of Polem J'Atric, the Interloper was transferred into a body created from a saved transporter pattern of Jaroch, reuniting Jaroch and Hawkins and getting Tovar down to the one life force he should have had. (Mind If I Play Through?, Aren't You Dead? [BG])

After the Interloper was removed, Tovar's remaining past lives fought for control of his body. When the Cardassian terrorist Fubar got the drop on Rosalyn Bain in her own home, knocking her out and then tying her up, he was delighted by Tovar's past lives, who cooked and cleaned for him. Fubar planned to take Tovar with him after he killed Rosalyn. Tovar was able to get his past lives to work together to build a device that coated Fubar in a shell of quick-drying chocolate, rendering him immobile. He was then beamed away and imprisoned by Section 31. After this, Tovar's past lives allowed him to keep control of his body for the most part. (The Ties That Bind [BG])

Carn, the head of Section 31, tried to recruit Tovar into organization, promising to help Tovar find out what happened to his missing parents. Carn sent Tovar to Huryl where Fleet Admiral Holden Sollars was vacationing with his mistress. Sollars was cheating on his wife, Section 31 Agent Clara Sollars, with a Bajoran woman named Seddi Tral. Tovar's assignment was to the relationship between Sollars and Tral, which he did. Carn then sent Tovar back to the USS Anomaly to deal with a malfunctioning holographic duplicate of Tovar. Once Tovar stopped the hologram, he told Carn that he would not be joining Section 31. Around the same time, Tovar was starting to date Lieutenant Jamie Torgerson. (Privileges Of Membership [BG])

Tovar continued to date Torgerson; although, his mother put an inadvertent strain on their relationship when she interrupted two of their dinner dates to discuss the Vulcan Alliance and Prosak. Concerned about Prosak's odd behavior after returning from a spy mission to Vulcan, Tovar followed her while they were attending a ceremony to install a new Praetor on Romulus. He arrived in the Praetor-to-be's office just after Rosalyn stopped a brain-washed Prosak from assassinating the new Praetor. Rosalyn told Tovar to take the credit for stopping Prosak and to have the Romulans scan her for signs of a forced mind meld, which there were. (Breaking In Is Hard To Do [BG])

A couple years after the Anomaly's return from Andromeda, Gyjik's Galaxy Gateway sent Marsden a final notice about the large debt she and the crew racked up in the Andromeda Galaxy, then after getting no response (the message bounced off of the Great Barrier surrounding the Milky Way), turned her over to Associates Acquisitions to collect what she owed. The Associates ship traveled to the Milky Way looking for the Anomaly. With no way to pay them back, Marsden beamed over to their ship with Tovar to work off her debt, since Bain had volunteered him to go along, much to Tovar's chagrin. The Anomaly crew realized that the Associates shuttle they brought back from Andromeda might be worth enough to pay off what Marsden owed, so they got it from Earth and, thanks to Cole Anfibon preventing the Associates from leaving the galaxy by crashing a microshuttle into their engines, were able to catch up to the Associates and give them the shuttle plus some engine repairs to satisfy Gyjik's debt. Tovar, Marsden, and Anfibon were returned to the Anomaly, and the Associates went back to Andromeda. (Past Due [BG])

During the Lucinda incident, Tovar and Marsden acknowledged their attraction to each other and ended up engaging in a heavy makeout session in the Anomaly's Jefferies tubes. Tovar, however, did not want to end his relationship with Torgerson. Marsden knew that he was trying to do the right thing. Torgerson wanted Tovar to be more present when he was with her, but he was finding it difficult due to his attraction to both Marsden and Prosak. (Bold Faced Lies [BG])

While were representing Starfleet at a high school career night, Prosak caught Tovar by surprise with a kiss and told him that she would be a better match for him than Torgerson. Tovar pulled her aside to talk about the kiss, but they were overheard by Marsden. This revelation resulted in a argument between the three of them right in the middle of the gym holding the career night. Both Prosak and Marsden stormed away from Tovar, with Marsden telling him to stay away from her until he figured out what he wanted and Prosak saying that Tovar was not the man she thought he was. While the verbal pummeling was not fun for Tovar, it did get a lot of students interested in checking out the Starfleet table. (The Future Of Starfleet [BG])

Torgerson learned that Marsden had feelings for Tovar thanks to posts on the shipwide messaging system put there by Ensign Yonk, who over heard Marsden talking to Captain Bain in the ship's pub. She stormed out of Tovar's quarters upon discovering this. (Rumor Control [BG]) Tovar chased her down, and she told him that she loved him. She asked Tovar if he felt the same way, but Bain summoned him before he could respond. After an omnipotent Megan Hartley interfered in the situation, Tovar realized that he was falling in love with Marsden. He resolved to end things with Torgerson, but was again called to the bridge because the Vulcans had cut the Romulan Empire off from the rest of the galaxy. (God Complex [BG])

Realizing that Tovar was in love with Marsden, Torgerson broke things off. Tovar said that he would try to make things work, then, once it was clear they were breaking up, asked if they could be friends. Torgerson was not interested in either option. With that relationship over, Tovar raced to find Marsden to tell her that he loved her. She was receptive until she found out that Torgerson broke up with him rather than Tovar having the guts to do it himself. She stormed off saying that Tovar didn't deserve her. Crushed, he went to see Prosak to talk. Having had a rough day of her own, Prosak jumped him and pulled him into her quarters, kissing him and pulling at his clothes. Tovar responded in kind, and the two fell onto her sofa together. (Once More, With Feelings [BG])

After sleeping with Prosak, Tovar went to talk to Marsden, something Kasyov told him specifically not to do, which led to an argument in which he revealed that he had sex with Prosak. Marsden was furious with him, telling him that they would never be together or even friends. With hostilities starting with the Vulcan Alliance, Tovar took the opportunity to escape his troubles on the Anomaly by volunteering to serve as a tactical officer on the Romulan Warhawk Shakalak. Marsden came to see him in the transporter room before he left and told him that he was an idiot for leaving. She also said to look her up when he returned to the Anomaly. Once aboard the Shakalak, Tovar learned that the ship's first officer, Sub-Commander Nural was actually his adopted sister Audrey Bain, who had been sent by Section 31 because events on the Shakalak and with the Vulcans were not what they seemed. She told him that they would be saving Earth but they wouldn't be coming back. Prior to Tovar's arrival, the Shakalak had ambushed a Vulcan frigate and beamed a cargo crate from it into the Shakalak's cargo bay. The ship was then in battle with other Vulcan ships before being rescued by the Anomaly. Tovar and Audrey later discovered that the cargo crate was actually a transporter unit holding twenty Vulcan soldiers under the command of Colonel Strep. Tovar and Audrey were able to briefly escape while the Vulcan soldiers that took control of the Shakalak, but they were eventually captured. Audrey was sent to the cargo hold with the rest of the crew while Tovar was put in the brig. Strep set the ship on a course for Earth and tried to force Tovar to give him information about Earth's defenses through a mind meld. Strep was not ready to deal with Tovar's past lives, who left him catatonic long enough for Tovar to get a message out to the Anomaly. Strep returned him to tbe brig, but when the Shakalak arrived at Earth, Audrey was able to help him escape. Strep and the Vulcans were attempting to retrieve the Kolch'ak Device from the Kantelov Annex on Earth to see if it could be used to control Romulans. It did indeed work on Romulans, but Tovar, Audrey, and a team from the USS Anomaly, including Marsden, was able to stop the Vulcans and destroy the device before they were able to escape with it. Tovar and Marsden decided to have dinner together and talk through everything. (Strategic Retreat, Uncomfortably Close, Devastating Logic, Scratching The Surface [BG])

Tovar and Marsden's dinner was interrupted, but they later found themselves working together closely in a Jefferies tube which escalated quickly to kissing to sex. Soon after, Tovar accompanied Bain, Prosak, and Centurion Nortal to Vulcan in the USS Navigator in an attempt to get to High Chancellor Sh’rak. Sh'rak knew they were coming, and the team only avoided being killed because of a timely intervention by Rosalyn Bain. Rosalyn wiped Bain, Prosak, and Nortal's minds of the incident and had Tovar get them out of Sh'rak's office. Outside, they were stopped by several armed Vulcans. Before they could call for beam out, they saw the Navigator crash into a mountain in the distance. They were rescued from capture by Sh'rak's guards by LOL, which beamed the away team, minus Prosak, up to their ship. While Bain returned to the Neutral Zone to take command of the Federation fleet, Tovar and Nortal remained behind with LOL to try to stop Sh'rak and rescue Prosak. Tovar and Nortal infiltrated the government complex disguised as sanitation workers, but Sh'rak took them all captive and grabbed Prosak into a mind meld in which he forced her to do whatever he wanted. The members of LOL stormed the governmental complex, giving Tovar and Eudora a chance to enter the meld. Sh'rak was overpowered by their combined minds, as well as those of Tovar's past lives. With Sh'rak deposed, Tovar returned to the Anomaly and had a dinner date with Marsden and resulted in them heading to the bedroom before the even got around to eating. (In One Door, Out The Other, Behind The Curtain, Live Long And Conquer [BG])

After Toflay threatened to smite her if she didn't get out of his kitchen, Nortal became interested in this particular past life of Tovar's, but he refused to summon Toflay for her. (Living Off The Land [BG])

Tovar was asked by Prosak to assist her in rescuing Captain Bain, who was to be put on trial by the Breen. The trial was about to move into the torture phase when Prosak, Tovar, and Marsden were able to locate Bain and beam him aboard the Allegra. Before they could return to the Anomaly, though, they were all incapacitated by the James T. Kirk Hologram. Tovar regained consciousness along with Prosak and Marsden inside a cargo container that Holo-Kirk ejected into space. They were soon picked up by Gridloo and Pridloo, who hoped the stray cargo container held something valuable. They commandeered the Pakleds' ship, and, seeing no other way to catch up with the Allegra, Tovar contacted Rosalyn, revealing her Section 31 affiliation to Marsden and Prosak. Rosalyn beamed aboard with equipment to help boost the freighter's speed, and they were able to catch up to the Allegra before Bain ran out of oxygen. (Trial And Error, The Bain Supremacy [BG])

When the USS Anomaly accidentally ended up in the pocket universe containing the Multek Enclave, Tovar was reunited with his parents, but neither Tanta or Jimsok had much interest in getting to know him. Captain Bain set a plan in motion to shut down the pocket universe generators and return the Multek Enclave to normal space. It was successful, but then he learned that the Multeks had hidden the Enclave in the first place to prevent their worlds from being taken over by the Dillon Consortium. Bain did everything he could to set things right, and took on an entire Consortium acquisition fleet while Lieutenant Marsden repaired the pocket universe generator. Marsden realized that she would have to stay inside the Enclave to activate the generators, separating her from Tovar forever. Tanta revealed to Marsden that she'd designed the system in the first place and told Marsden to get back to Tovar and to tell him to be happy. Marsden returned to the Anomaly, and, in a last comm before she reactivated the generators, Tanta told Tovar to call her "Tanta" instead of mother, since the Bains were his true parents. Once the Enclave was safe again, the Anomaly went to Waystation Prime, where Tovar officially added "Bain" as his last name and married Shelly Marsden. (Right Where We Left It, Welcome To The Hotel California, Contractual Obligations [BG])

Tovar finally met his in-laws, Harold and Ann Marsden after the Marsdens discovered the Pliggeri homeworld and the Anomaly was sent to assess the situation. They liked Tovar immediately and kindly didn't hold a grudge when the Anomaly crew's actions resulted in the destruction of the entire planet. (Primary Sources [BG])

While Bain, Marsden. Commander Vioxx, and Nortal went to the Days of Fryer Past restaurant on Nelephron for what was supposed to be an official meeting, Tovar was left in command of the Anomaly. It was all a Dillon Consortium trap. The Anomaly was called away to a nearby asteroid field by a fake distress call. Once there, the ship was disabled by an interference array hidden in multiple false asteroids as five Consortium vessels moved in to kill the crew and take possess of the Anomaly and its anti-singularity drive. Tovar came up with a plan to get the Anomaly operational again and surprise the Consortium ships. After escaping the asteroid field, they were confronted by a Consortium fleet, but Tovar successfully stalled for time until a Starfleet/Romulan force arrived, prompting the Consortium fleet to surrender. Afterwards, Marsden learned that Bain and Tovar had suspected a trap all along, and that Bain had specifically ordered Tovar not to warn her about it. While she was upset briefly, Marsden understood that it was part of their jobs and one of the things that made their professional and personal connections messy. (Welcome to the Party [BG])

After the Anomaly faced a fleet of Breen ships with anti-singularity drives and returned to Earth for an extended refit, the ship was stolen by Cabral under mysterious circumstances. Starfleet suspected Bain's involvement, but Tovar never asked him directly about it, since he didn't want to know the answer either way. He may also have suspected Marsden's involvement, but he never pushed the question with her. Tovar was in line for a first officer position on the USS Astoria. He ended up not taking it and instead opted to remain on Earth working in the Tactics division at Starfleet Headquarters while Marsden rejoined Starfleet Research & Development. They had a son, Jarrett Bain, who, after graduating from Starfleet Academy, served on the USS Holloway under his grandfather, Reginald Bain. (Going, Going, Gone... [BG])

One of Tovar's past lives plays the Yynsian equivalent of the bagpipes. Another Ch'tot used to be a gigolo.
