Lt. Cmdr. Tovar gets a job offer, but this offer from the sort of folks who don't take "no" for an answer: Section 31. Will Tovar be able to avoid joining the Federation's most secret service? Or is it something that he even wants to avoid?

Summary

With the Anomaly now repaired, Captain Reginald Bain takes the ship out again. Its new assignment is to serve as Starfleet’s quick response vessel, using its anti-singularity drive to get to crises in places too far away for other vessels to reach in time to assist.

Lieutenant Commander Tovar is feeling much better after coming to an understanding with his past lives and has a date arranged with Lieutenant Jamie Torgerson. She arrives in her quarters that evening for their date, but she is far more interested in getting her hands on him than in eating dinner. When she goes back to the bedroom, Tovar suddenly finds Carn, the head of Section 31 sitting in his living area. Carn tells Tovar that they are at a Section 31 base and no longer on the Anomaly and that the Torgerson that he was interacting with was actually a hologram from the Mega-Sim. He offers Tovar a position in Section 31.

Back on the Anomaly, a holographic Tovar has taken his place. The hologram had the date with Torgerson, but only ate dinner with her silently, watched the stars with her for a little bit, then ushered her out of his quarters. She tells Lieutenant Shelly Marsden that the whole date only lasted 35 minutes.

Tovar refuses Carn’s offer and is returned to his quarters the Anomaly. He bolts from his quarters, running past Torgerson, who had come to talk to him about their date from the night before. Tovar goes to see Bain, who is in the process of setting up his Captain’s Lounge behind the bridge, and tells him the truth about Section 31. Based on Bain’s response, Tovar realizes he is still on a holodeck. Carn dangles the possibility of helping Tovar solve the mystery of what happened to his parents in front of him, and Tovar agrees to start his training with Section 31.

Carn transports Tovar to a beach on planet Huryl for his first assignment: Fleet Admiral Holden Sollars is cheating on his wife, Section 31 Agent Clara Sollars, with a Bajoran woman named Seddi Tral. Tovar is to lure Tral away from Sollars.

At Bain’s request, Commander Prosak summons the Tovar hologram to her office to discuss his recent behavioral shift. She laments that Admiral Kristen Larkin has saddled her with Yeoman Paul Ralston to keep an eye on her after her actions in the Andromeda Galaxy. She encourages him to talk about his feelings with Bain.

Tovar fakes drowning, but instead of Tral, Sollars swims out to save him. Tovar pretends to be a merchant and offers to sell an engagement ring to Sollars for Tral. He replies that they don’t have that kind of relationship, which angers Tral, and she storms off down the beach.

On the Anomaly, Dr. Fred Nooney is preparing to spend the evening in his holopod, which is now working again after the ship’s holographic systems were repaired in spacedock. Nurse Ih'vik says that she’s surprised that he isn’t reactivating Steve!. Excited, Nooney races out of sickbay and goes to see Marsden. They go down to the primary holographic junction at the holographic matrix. As Marsden is making adjustments needed to bring back Steve!, Chief Comptroller Martin Kawafura emerges from his office complaining about his padd. Marsden takes it from him and says she will look at it. Marden then reactivates Steve!, who reappears and breaks into song.

Marsden’s adjustments to the ship’s holographic systems affects the holographic Tovar, who hears a voice summoning him to the holomatrix.

On Huryl, Tovar is comforting Tral, who was left there by Sollars. Carn interrupts and tells Tovar that the holographic Tovar has malfunctioned and that Tovar is being sent back to the Anomaly to stop it. After beaming back into his quarters, Tovar charges out of his quarters and almost directly into Torgerson. He apologizes for acting weird lately and schedules another date for that night.

He goes to the bridge and finds that the hologram hid a neutronic charge at the tac-ops station, which will destroy every living cell on the bridge but leave the technology intact. He gets everyone off of the bridge before it detonates. He tracks the hologram to the holomatrix core. He deduces that the holographic Tovar is trying to bring back the Jim Kirk Emergency Diplomatic Hologram that tried to kill them all in the Andromeda Galaxy and destroys the holographic matrix, shutting off the Tovar hologram as well as Steve!, saddening Nooney.

Tovar is able to retrieve a nanolinear chip containing both the Kirk and Tovar holograms. Just as he is about to destroy the chip, Carn stops him and take the chip. Tovar tells him that he won’t be joining Section 31. Carn relents and leaves because he has a date with Tral. Tovar goes to prepare for his date with Torgerson.
