The Breen have stolen a brain from the Neptune Research Facility. Is this an isolated incident? The beginning of a new Breen offensive? Or is it something a bit more complex?
Summary
On the USS Explorer 124 years in the past, Captain Andrew Baxter talks to Dean Wilcox in sickbay. Dean, despite a massive head injury, as discovered a new layer of space, which he calls DeanSpace.
124 years later on the Neptune Research Station, Subject 341, also known as the disembodied brain of Dean Wilcox, summons the Director of Brain Operations, Dr. Dennis Pommier, and asks to have his vitals checked because he had a nightmare. Normally, he does not dream. Pommier discovers that someone scanned Subject 341. Almost immediately, Breen attack the station and beam a team aboard. The Breen come to the lab, grab Subject 341, and beam away.
When Dr. Natalia Kasyov learns about the brain-knapping, she asks Captain Reginald Bain to have the USS Anomaly sent to find Subject 341.
Subject 341 is taken aboard the Breen Imperial Cruiser Regularity, where its commander, Thot-Luss forces Subject 341 to help them enter DeanSpace. Luss and Vent Blat, the observer from the Breen Leadership Council aboard the Regularity, argue about keeping Subject 341, with Luss insisting that he is necessary. The ship receives a message from Breen command with their orders. Luss and Blat listen to the recording in Luss’ office, and Blat determines that the vague message means they should attack the Romulans to destabilize their alliance with the Federation. Luss kills Blat, deletes the message, creates a new one, and calls for a medical crew, saying that Blat has had an accident.
Admiral Kristen Larkin tells Bain and Kasyov about the Explorer’s encounter with DeanSpace and the threat it represents. She orders Bain to head to Breen territory to locate Subject 341. She then contacts Carn of Section 31 for information about the Regularity’s location. After that, she comms Clop-Crunk, the Breen Ambassador to the Federation, who claims not to know anything about Subject 341. She sends the Anomaly the information she got from Carn about the Regularity along with orders to stop the ship at all costs.
On Breen, the Breen leader, Grot-Grart receives a recorded message from Thot-Luss stating that he is embarrassed by the Breen’s continued efforts to conquer and build an empire while the Federation is peaceful. He is taking the Regularity to Earth to settle down try to form a common bond with other races of the Alpha Quadrant.
On the XAXRDAARD, Thot-Phul learns of Luss’ defection and orders his ship to set a course for Earth, scanning for the Regularity as they go.
On the Anomaly, Kasyov is able to detect a phase-shift, which is a sign of a ship going to warp in DeanSpace. They determine that the ship is heading to Earth, and the Anomaly pursues.
Clop-Crunk tells Admiral Larkin that they have a crazy captain on their hands, who is bringing his ship to Earth to attack the planet. The Breen fleet is coming to stop him. She offers to help if they can tell her how to find the ship. She contacts Bain and tells him of the threat.
Phul learns that the Anomaly is trailing the Regularity. He plans to wait until the Anomaly captures the Regularity, then swoop in and destroy both vessels.
Cabral believes he can keep the Anomaly safe in DeanSpace and get them back out again. Larkin, meanwhile, joins Captain Barnum Dax on the USS Enterprise-J. She tells Dax that he and the other Starfleet ships that have gathered are to fire on the Regularity the moment it appears.
Kasyov discovers that Subject 341 has ripped open a layer between DeanSpace and normal space, which Bain decides to exploit. Once in DeanSpace, they quickly find and comm the Regularity. Luss explains his desire to defect and that they will need to get the members of his crew who don’t want to defect off of the ship. Bain decides to make it look like the Regularity has been scuttled.
Subject 341 tears another rip from DeanSpace to normal space, allowing the XAXRDAARD to enter. Bain tasks the Anomaly with destroying the XAXRDAARD. Luss and Subject 341 face a warp core breach on the Regularity and get the crew to the escape pods. Once the crew is in the pods, Bain and Kasyov beam to the Regularity to help get it safely to Earth while Commander Prosak puts the Anomaly between the Regularity and the XAXRDAARD and engages the XAXRDAARD in battle.
As the Regularity approaches Earth, Bain has Luss and Subject 341 release the Regularity’s escape pods through a tear back to normal space just as the Anomaly destroys the XAXRDAARD and returns to normal space as well.
The Breen fleet and the Enterprise-J detect the debris of the XAXRDAARD, and, assuming that it’s the Regularity, stand down and leave the area. The Regularity remains in DeanSpace until all of the other ships depart.
Later, Clop-Crunk contacts Larkin about another missing Breen ship, the XAXRDAARD.
The rescued Breen are returned to their space, and Starfleet takes possession of the Regularity. As per Starfleet policy, the Enterprise-J gets all of the credit for protecting Earth from the Breen. Kasyov takes Subject 341 back to the Neptune Research Station and promises to visit him more often.

So...yeah...this story is "The Hunt For Red October." We kind of ignored the fact that Thot Phul and the other Breen from the XAXRDAARD were attacked by the Anomaly and that they didn't see the Regularity blow up. You can assume they believed that the Regularity was destroyed as well. Also, since the crew of XAXRDAARD knew their ship blew up, there was really no reason for Crunk to ask Larkin for help in locating it. But we liked that scene from Red October.
