With the Waystation command crew still reeling from recent events, Federation President Bradley Dillon hits them with another whopper. A V.I.P. is on the way, but it's the uninvited guest that is really going to complicate matters.
Summary
Federation President Bradley Dillon interrupts a rather strained command crew briefing to inform Captain Lisa Beck that he will be presenting Captain Jean-luc Picard with the Presidential Starfleet Medal of Service and Valor in three weeks and that he needs Beck and company, particularly Yeoman Tina Jones to handle planning the event. Considering how badly the command crew has been getting along of late, Beck is certain that this is not going to go well.
With three days to go until the ceremony, the command crew is still finalizing the details of the event. After another awkward meeting, Lieutenant Commander Craig Porter decides that he has had enough and tells Beck that he enjoyed their night together. He doesn't want to date her, and avoiding the issue isn't working. With the ice broken, Beck and Porter are able to reconnect and agree to use their evening together as the fodder for inappropriate inside jokes. The pair then receives word that Dr. Kathy Beck is requesting docking clearance in a vessel of unknown design and that she's there to see Captain Beck. As they head to the docking bay, Porter tells Beck about Kathy's plans to build a timeship. When they arrive, they see that Kathy does indeed claim to have constructed such a vessel, and she wants Beck to go with her to prevent their parents' deaths in the past. Beck asks for a night to think about it. As Beck spends the evening mulling it over, Kathy goes to see Porter, since he's the only one besides her sister that she knows on the station, and she's looking for the type of companionship that her sister can't provide.
The next morning, Beck agrees to go along, over Bradley's objections. As Porter monitors the time ship's flight, Kathy has Beck take an anti-nausea medication. Moments later, the time ship vanishes in a surge of chronitons. The anti-nausea drug actually knocked Beck out, so that Kathy could take her now-cloaked ship to their real destination: the Romulan Colony of Zycam. Beck is handed over to Tarmak, the colony's governor. Beck met Tarmak previously, when he was the Romulan Foreign Minister. In that capacity, he attempted to trick President Dillon into signing a treaty that would have handed control of Earth to the Romulans. Soon after this, he backed Shinzon in his failed Praetorship. Twice-disgraced, he was exiled to a governor post on Zycam, and now he wants revenge on the two men he feels are responsible, Bradley Dillon and Jean-luc Picard. To get at them, though, he needs Waystation's command codes. He already hired Pophlie in one attempt to get them. When that failed, he made a deal with Kathy. She would hand over her sister in exchange for all of the Romulans' research on time travel.
Back on Waystation, another meeting about the ceremony ends with Yeoman Tina Jones locking the command crew in a holodeck until they talk through their issues with each other. After several apologies and acknowledgements that the lockdown situation was causing them all to behave badly, the command crew's friendships are on the mend.
Unwilling to take the time to torture the information he needs out of Beck, Tarmak has brought in two independent contractors, Spaanz and Taanz, who inform Beck that they are there to read her mind.
