A shore leave on the Planet of Obnoxious Belchers turns ugly as Captain Alexander Rydell and Commander Travis Dillon struggle to save the planet's government from being overthrown.

Summary

The USS Secondprize travels to Kilma Omega IV, Planet of the Obnoxious Belchers, where Captain Alexander Rydell is to attend a ceremony commemorating the one thousandth anniversary of Yolek The Gaseous' defeat of Unel the Bloated in a duel of burps while the rest of the crew takes some much needed shore leave and Lieutenant Commander Jaroch is left to man the Secondprize. The current leader of Kilma Omega IV, Minister Yolek The Fourteenth, arranges for her aides, Amjex and Jenel to show Rydell around, not realizing that Amjex and Jenel have plans for Rydell.

Back on the Secondprize, Commander Scott Baird and Ensign Emily Sullivan are almost the last crewmembers to beam down. Just as they are ready to transport, Commander Travis Dillon rushes in to join them. Determined not to get stuck with the Secondprize's annoying first officer, Baird and Sullivan resolve to ditch Dillon as soon as they get to the surface, which they are able to do, using Baird's bicycle as an escape vehicle. Sullivan, who wasn't looking forward to spending her shore leave watching Monica Vaughn hit on guys, decides to go camping with Baird. With the Secondprize now empty, Jaroch settles in to enjoy his solitude. This plan is interrupted when the ship's computer informs him that they have matters to discuss. The computer, who had attempted to seduce Jaroch in Secret Admirer once again asks Jaroch to have a relationshop with it. Jaroch refuses, and the computer informs him that it is going to kill him. Jaroch is forced to flee the bridge to the lower decks.

Jenel and Amjex take Rydell to a museum, where they accuse him of attempting to steal a jar containing a belch emitted by Yolek the Gaseous. Rydell is arrested and imprisoned. Dillon discovers what has happened to Rydell and tries to free him, ending up imprisoned himself in the process. Amjex informs them both that he will be parading them out in front of the people of Kilma Omega IV at the ceremony the following day. Amjex has designs on becoming Minister himself, and he hopes that the current Minister will be forced to resign when it is revealed that a member of the Federation, with whom Minister Yolek talking much to Amjex's disgust, has tried to steal one of their sacred artifacts. Meanwhile, Baird and Sullivan get closer while Jaroch narrowly avoids several death traps. The computer corrals Jaroch into an empty holodeck and binds him into a chair.

The next day at the ceremony, Amjex presents Rydell and Dillon to the crowd, accusing them of conspiring to steal the belch. Dillon takes action, charging Amjex and knocking the pair of them into the River Belchus. When Dillon surfaces, he lets out a positively enormous burp, which convinces the Kilma Omegans that Dillon is the foretold coming of the Gaseous One. Dillon and Rydell are released, and Dillon gives a speech explaining why he and Rydell are innocent, which puts the audience to sleep, prompting them to change their mind about him. Instead of the Gaseous One, he is determined to be the Great Windbag. Amjex and Janel are arrested.

After hour upon hour of staring at the lines on the holodeck wall, Jaroch finally gives in to the computer and lets it have its way with him. Baird and Sullivan, who are heading into the holodeck for a cycling date, find him as the Secondprize is leaving Kilma Omega IV.

Belch-O-Rama was actually written in the Fall of 1993, well after Star Traks 1, Star Traks 2, Star Traks 3 and the first round of short stories. I decided to go back and explain how Commander Baird and Ensign Sullivan ended up in a relationship by the time of "Star Traks 2" when there was no inkling of interest between them in "Star Traks 1." I also wanted to introduce Ensign Andrea Carr. The planet of Obnoxious Belchers had been a throwaway reference in the Captain's Logs of "Star Traks 1," but it seemed like it could be a fun planet to visit.
