While Captain Reginald Bain, Lieutenant Commander Tovar, Ensign Hector Arroyo, and Lieutenant Shelly Marsden are busy during the USS Anomaly's stopover at Earth, Commander Prosak, Dr. Natalia Kasyov, and Dr. Fred Nooney decide to take a vacation to the scenic Klingon homeworld. Unfortunately, "Klingon Hospitality" is a contradiction in terms.

Summary

While the USS Anomaly is spacedock for repairs following the ship’s return from the Andromeda Galaxy, Commander Prosak, Dr. Fred Nooney, Lieutenant Gworos, and Lieutenant Jamie Torgerson, the ship’s Chief Anthropologist, Costume Expert, and Historian, take a trip to a Klingon dude ranch on Qo’nos on the USS Titicaca. After some prodding from Cabral, Dr. Natalia Kasyov decides to go as well. Nooney knocks Gworos out with a hypospray for the trip, due to the Klingon’s claustrophobia.

The Klingons were conquered by the Romulans about 20 years earlier, when their empire collapsed. Two years ago, the Klingons broke free of the Romulans to become their own sovereign power again. Some of them started the Nuq'neh Corral dude ranch on the outskirts of the capital city of Qo’nos to draw in tourists. Prosak and the others beam down to the dude ranch and head to the saloon. The Klingons there are not happy to see a Romulan. Torgerson lies and says Prosak is a Vulcan in the midst of pon farr. Gworos is disgusted at how the Klingons are pandering to tourists. Nooney angers the bartender by continually ordering drinks they don’t have and gets tossed out of the saloon. The saloon owner comes and apologizes for the bartender’s behavior. After finishing their drinks, they head to their hotel.

The next morning, Kasyov plans to ride a wild targ at the rodeo. After the group has breakfast at the hotel and meets Droo, a Tellarite veteran of the Tellarite/Gorn wars from several years prior, Prosak is accosted in the street by Chynok, who shoves Prosak to the ground and tells her to leave because Qo’nos is no place for tourists. Droo tells them that Chynok is a reactionary who is pushing for the Klingons to return to their old ways. Prosak is then approached by Krard, a KlingaVulc she had met previously. He says he will keep it a secret that Prosak is a Romulan if she teaches him Vulcan ways.

Prosak finds Chynok in the saloon and asks to debate her about the logic of the Klingons isolating themselves from off-worlders. Chynok refuses and tells Prosak to be off of Qo’nos by sundown or Chynok will remove her. Prosak replies that if Chynok will not debate her, she will challenge Chynok to honorable combat. Chynok accepts and tells Prosak to meet her outside the saloon at sundown before picking Prosak up and sliding her down the bar.

The rest of the group plans to go to the rodeo that night, but Prosak declines, saying she has an appointment. That evening, she waits for Chynok in front of the saloon. Gworos arrives because he heard about the combat. He tells Prosak that she will likely be killed by gives her a tip that Klingon women are extremely ticklish behind their elbows before heading into the saloon. Krard comes out at the same time and asks Prosak if Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations includes those who do not wish to have diversity thrust upon them. Prosak does not have an answer. Krard says that a real Vulcan would and heads off down the street.

Chynok emerges from the Sherriff’s office with Krard coming out a short time later. Chynok then announces that Prosak is a Romulan, turning the gathered crowed against Prosak. Chynok tosses Prosak a lop'leth then they begin to fight. Prosak uses Gworos’ idea and tickles Chynok. Chynok laughs until she falls on top of Prosak, knocking the Romulan out.

At the rodeo, Nooney is beating Kasyov’s targ riding time when an announcement suddenly declares that the Nuq’neh Corrall until further notice.

Prosak wakes up in a Vulcan sickbay. Sh’rak and Krard are there. He explains that Chynok has left the system in a hurry. After talking to Prosak, Krard realized that only real Vulcans could help the Klingons, so he contacted them. Sh’rak, who is now Vulcan High Chancellor, agreed and the Vulcans have taken control of the Klingons.

The Vulcans return Prosak to the Titicaca, which heads back to Earth. The Anomaly crewmembers did get refunds, at least.
