Somewhere on Breen an assassin waits for the chance to kill Captain Reginald Bain. The cards are stacked against Bain; enemies lurk behind every door; and the only one who can save him is...his wife? Let the subterfuge begin in "Mrs. Bain, You're Needed."
Summary
Thot-Phul learns from one of his officers, Zar, that the Hermes is now the USS Anomaly, and, even better, the ship has been invited to Breen for peace talks. He decides to be the first to “welcome” them.
At Starfleet Academy, Rosalyn Bain is meeting with a student when she senses someone in the room. After shooing the student away, she calls for the newcomer to show themselves. Carn, the Director of Section 31, decloaks and tells her that someone is going to try to kill her husband, Reginald Bain, to sabotage the Federation’s peace talks with the Breen. He orders her to protect Bain and the Anomaly.
Upon arriving at the Breen homeworld with their passenger, Ambassador Horace Rogers, the Anomaly is met by Thot Phul’s ship, and after some pleasantries and adjusting of the universal translator, Phul asks for a tour of the Anomaly, which Bain agrees to. Zar tells Phul that he has found an assassin willing to take the job of killing Bain.
Tovar goes to the Anomaly’s armory, where Rosalyn reveals her presence on the ship and lets him know that Bain and the peace talks are in danger.
A flashback reveals how Tovar learned that his adopted mother was a Section 31 agent when he found her with the body of an Orion she’d just killed who had been sent to disrupt Earth’s mass transit system.
Rosalyn asks Tovar to keep an eye on Bain and make sure that he is not left alone with the Breen. She then goes to see Pelt-Bart, a Breen contact, for information about who is after Bain. He refuses to help, so Rosalyn leaves contact instructions if he changes his mind.
The tour is uneventful, but during a game of badminton with Tovar later, Bain hurts his Achilles tendon. Tovar takes him to sickbay.
Rosalyn sneaks aboard Phul’s ship and finds a list of 100 potential assassins on Zar’s computer.
Bain is released from sickbay and receives an invite for himself and Ambassador Rogers to a dinner on Breen, which he accepts, much to Rosalyn’s dismay once Tovar tells her about it. She tells Tovar to stay with Bain.
During the dinner, a leak forms in the atmospheric shield protecting the chamber from Breen’s harsh environment. Rosalyn knocks Bain unconscious and beams him, Tovar, and herself back to her raceabout without Ambassador Rogers. After discussing the situation with Tovar, she returns him and Bain to the Anomaly.
Bain once again finds himself in sickbay recovering from being knocked out. As he is being released, Ambassador Rogers strolls him and, when asked how he survived the atmosphere breach, says that the Breen saved him. Tovar is suspicious.
Bain knows when he is not wanted and informs the Breen that he is leaving, despite their objections that they want to continue the peace process. Bain says that the Federation will send other diplomats and orders the Anomaly to leave Breen. Then he goes to take a bath, with Tovar standing guard in the next room. Rosalyn appears and talks to Tovar. They hear Bain in distress and race into the bathroom to find him unconscious and someone who looked just like Tovar about to finish Bain off. The fake Tovar flickers and turns into Horace Rogers, revealing that he is a hologram. After Tovar is unsuccessful in fighting him, Rosalyn traps the hologram in an energy field and then destroys it. Tovar concludes that the assassin must have replaced Rogers during their tour of the ship.
Bain is recovering from a headache as the Anomaly heads off on their next mission. Rosalyn beams onto Phul’s ship cloaked and beats him into unconsciousness before returning to her raceabout and heading home.
