The USS Secondprize races across time and space to prevent two escaped mental patients from killing Captain Alexander Rydell. It's big! It's long! It answers lots of questions! What is going with Jaroch? Whatever happened to Zero, the guy who kidnapped Rydell way back in Star Traks 2? Just how nuts is Rebecca Singer? Can Commander Travis Dillon have a mature relationship? What is Yyns really like, anyway? How do starships perform the slingshot timewarp maneuver when they don't have a super-smart Vulcan stationed on board? When is the crew of Deep Space Nine finally going to get a cameo? It's all here...I promise.

Summary

Fellow Tantalus V patients Rebecca Singer and Zero find that they have a common obsession: Captain Alexander Rydell. With the help of Gruver, they are able to escape from the facility and make their way to Deep Space Nine, where they steal the USS Defiant. They believe that with that kind of firepower at their command, Rydell will be forced to surrender to them.

Meanwhile on the USS Secondprize, Lieutenant Commander Jaroch's condition has been deteriorating. After Jaroch collapses at a crew function, Dr. Elizabeth Aldridge tells Rydell that Jaroch is experiencing a Yynsian condition known as the Seratch, the emergence of the personality of a heretofore unknown past life, and that he needs to go back to Yyns. Jaroch, Aldridge, and Counselor Claire Webber, whom Jaroch requests to accompany him, leave the Secondprize in the runabout USS Hudson. They soon arrive at the planet, and Jaroch's presence (or J'Ter's more specifically) draws the attention of Truk, a Yynsian housing the lifeforce of T'Mak, a warrior J'Ter slaughtered in battle. T'Mak was also J'Ter's brother, which made the whole slaughtering thing a bit more personal.

The Defiant catches up with the Secondprize, and Singer and Zero demand that Rydell and Dr. Aldridge, whom Singer has had a burning hatred for ever since Aldridge visited her at Tantalus V, beam over to the Defiant. The Secondprize is able to escape but not before Singer and Zero learn that Aldridge is on Yyns. Singer decides they need a new plan of action. Since Rydell fought her, she concludes that that couldn't her Alex. Horror-struck, she realizes that he must still be trapped on 20th Century Earth in the body of his ancestor. Therefore, she will take the Defiant back in time to retrieve "her Alex," while Zero goes to Yyns to kill Dr. Aldridge.

On Yyns, Jaroch meets with his sister, P'Tal, who is a priestess at the Temple of Mi Clane, where Jaroch will be guided through his Seratch. Truk/T'Mak shows up and challenges J'Ter to battle. Jaorch is able to summon J'Ter and win the fight, but he collapses immediately afterwards.

The Secondprize chases the Defiant to the Sol system, and, based on the Defiant's trajectory, Starfleet Command concludes that the Defiant is planning to perform a slingshot maneuver to go back in time to the latter part of the 20th Century. Rydell guesses that Singer is after his ancestor and orders the Secondprize to slingshot after them. They miscalculate slightly and arrive before the Defiant. Not knowing how much time they have Rydell and Commander Travis Dillon beam down to Norfolk, Virginia to set up surveillance on the 20th Century Alex Rydell.
