The USS Secondprize races across time and space to prevent two escaped mental patients from killing Captain Alexander Rydell. It's big! It's long! It answers lots of questions! What is going with Jaroch? Whatever happened to Zero, the guy who kidnapped Rydell way back in Star Traks 2? Just how nuts is Rebecca Singer? Can Commander Travis Dillon have a mature relationship? What is Yyns really like, anyway? How do starships perform the slingshot timewarp maneuver when they don't have a super-smart Vulcan stationed on board? When is the crew of Deep Space Nine finally going to get a cameo? It's all here...I promise.

Summary

Fellow Tantalus V patients Rebecca Singer and Zero find that they have a common obsession: Captain Alexander Rydell. With the help of Gruver, they are able to escape from the facility and make their way to Deep Space Nine, where they steal the USS Defiant. They believe that with that kind of firepower at their command, Rydell will be forced to surrender to them.

Meanwhile on the USS Secondprize, Lieutenant Commander Jaroch's condition has been deteriorating. After Jaroch collapses at a crew function, Dr. Elizabeth Aldridge tells Rydell that Jaroch is experiencing a Yynsian condition known as the Seratch, the emergence of the personality of a heretofore unknown past life, and that he needs to go back to Yyns. Jaroch, Aldridge, and Counselor Claire Webber, whom Jaroch requests to accompany him, leave the Secondprize in the runabout USS Hudson. They soon arrive at the planet, and Jaroch's presence (or J'Ter's more specifically) draws the attention of Truk, a Yynsian housing the lifeforce of T'Mak, a warrior J'Ter slaughtered in battle. T'Mak was also J'Ter's brother, which made the whole slaughtering thing a bit more personal.

The Defiant catches up with the Secondprize, and Singer and Zero demand that Rydell and Dr. Aldridge, whom Singer has had a burning hatred for ever since Aldridge visited her at Tantalus V, beam over to the Defiant. The Secondprize is able to escape but not before Singer and Zero learn that Aldridge is on Yyns. Singer decides they need a new plan of action. Since Rydell fought her, she concludes that that couldn't her Alex. Horror-struck, she realizes that he must still be trapped on 20th Century Earth in the body of his ancestor. Therefore, she will take the Defiant back in time to retrieve "her Alex," while Zero goes to Yyns to kill Dr. Aldridge.

On Yyns, Jaroch meets with his sister, P'Tal, who is a priestess at the Temple Of Mi Clane, where Jaroch will be guided through his Seratch. Truk/T'Mak shows up and challenges J'Ter to battle. Jaorch is able to summon J'Ter and win the fight, but he collapses immediately afterwards. Jeroch is sedated and begins a very difficult Seratch process. Of course, as was bound to happen, Zero shows up in the middle of it to kill Aldridge.

The Secondprize chases the Defiant to the Sol system, and, based on the Defiant's trajectory, Starfleet Command concludes that the Defiant is planning to perform a slingshot maneuver to go back in time to the latter part of the 20th Century. Rydell guesses that Singer is after his ancestor and orders the Secondprize to slingshot after them. They miscalculate slightly and arrive before the Defiant. Not knowing how much time they have Rydell and Commander Travis Dillon beam down to Norfolk, Virginia to keep an eye on the 20th Century Alex Rydell. While setting surveillance devices in Alex's apartment, AA6, Rydell and Dillon are discovered by Alex and Alex's roommate, the 20th Century Travis Dillon.

Aldridge flees up the temple and eventually back to the runabout with Zero in pursuit. Jaroch, Webber, and P'Tal are able to assist her, and Zero is taken into custody. They return to the temple to finish the Seratch. The new past life emerging turns out to be Carl Jaroch, a 20th Century friend of Alex and Travis and, more surprisingly, a human.

Rydell and Dillon are able to talk their way out of trouble, letting the 20th Century Travis in on the truth while they're at it. Soon a new problem develops. Rydell begins randomly swapping minds with Alex. Saturday arrives, and Alex and Travis leave for Carl Jaroch's house, unware that high above them the USS Defiant is arriving. Singer takes one of the Defiant's microshuttles down to the surface to find her Alex while the Secondprize remains hidden behind the moon.

Jaroch completes the Seratch and insists that the Secondprize officers have to leave immediately. He now has access to Carl Jaroch's memories and knows that Carl, Alex, Travis, Rydell, and Dillon are in grave danger. En route to the Sol system, Jaroch also confesses to Counselor Webber what has been causing his mental disturbances over the last few months. He is in love with Patricia Hawkins but knows that he cannot reveal his feelings, since she is involved with Commander Dillon.

As Gruver on the Defiant spots the Secondprize and moves in to attack, Singer tracks Alex to Carl Jaroch's apartment by scanning for his brainwaves. Rydell and Dillon arrive and prevent Singer from taking Alex. In the confusion, Alex, Travis, and Carl flee to nearby Greenbriar Mall with Singer in pursuit and Rydell and Dillon in pursuit of her. Meanwhile, the Secondprize is taking a pounding from the Defiant and speeds into the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter looking for some cover. The Defiant forces the Secondprize out of the asteroid belt and back toward the sun. Just as the Defiant is closing in, the Runabout Hudson streaks into view, completing its time warp and opening fire on the Defiant. The runabout has been severely damaged by the stresses of the slingshot maneuver. The Secondprize is able to beam Jaroch, Webber, and Aldridge aboard just before the runabout explodes. The resulting blast catches the Defiant, crippling it.

Singer chases Alex, Travis, and Carl into an empty storefront in the mall. Rydell and Dillon arrive right behind her. Singer holds all of them at phaser-point, but she is disarmed when Jaroch and Hawkins arrive from the Secondprize. Hawkins checks to make sure Dillon is okay, causing Jaroch to finally break down and reveal his feelings for her.

Dr. Aldridge wipes Alex's, Travis', and Carl's memories of everything that has just occured as well as Travis' memories of Rydell's earlier visit to the 20th Century. Hawkins is flattered by Jaroch's feelings, but cannot return them. The Defiant is repaired, and both it and the Secondprize return to the 24th Century, at which point Singer is sent back to Tantalus V where Zero is waiting for her.

Two months later, the Secondprize crew attends the wedding of Lieutenant Emily Sullivan and Commander Scott Baird. During the crisis, Sullivan was left in command of the Secondprize. She and Baird had engaged in some verbal fireworks, which quickly became fireworks of an entirely different sort.
