Starfleet wants to know what the Vulcans are up to, so who better to send than a Romulan who really wants to be a Vulcan? Umm...do you get the feeling someone should have thought this plan through a bit better?
Summary
Captain Reginald Bain has a clandestine meeting with Captain Pratello Maddox on D’Sarva Three. Maddox tells Bain that all of the Vulcans in Starfleet resigned their commissions two days earlier and went to serve in the Vulcan Alliance. She wants Bain to send Commander Prosak to infiltrate the Vulcans and gather information. Bain refuses, and Maddox returns to her ship where Rosalyn Bain is waiting. Maddox tells her that she tried, but Bain wouldn’t budge. She gives Rosalyn the idea that Lieutenant Commander Tovar might be able to convince, and Rosalyn leaves for the USS Anomaly, where Tovar is having dinner in his quarters with Lieutenant Jamie Torgerson. When Torgerson ducks out to get them another bottle of wine from her quarters, Rosalyn tells Tovar that she needs him to convince Bain to send Prosak into the Vulcan Alliance without Starfleet knowing about it. She leaves just before Torgerson returns with the wine.
The next morning, Tovar visits Bain in his Captain’s Lounge and talks him into sending Prosak to find out why the Vulcans are behaving so uncharacteristically. She agrees to the mission and heads out in the Shuttlecraft Gnork with the cover story that she is taking a three-week vacation to Altair Six. She is actually going to Deep Space 78, which she’ll catch a civilian transport to Vulcan the name Soprak and a Vulcan credit line provided by Tovar. She also has a transceiver in her ear and a locator beacon embedded in an IDIC symbol that she can wear around her neck. She will pose as a journalist covering High Chancellor Sh'rak’s address about Vulcan’s secession from the Federation.
After several days of travel, Prosak arrives on Vulcan and checks in with Bain to let him know what she arrived safely. She attends Sh’rak’s address then approaches him afterwards to ask him questions. He takes her to his office then asks to meld with her. He is on her in an instance, forcing the meld and saying that he recognizes her as Prosak. Then Prosak blacks out.
Six days later, the Anomaly is loitering near Vulcan space while Bain and Tovar wait for any word from Prosak. The rest of the crew has no idea why they are there. Prosak returns in the Gnork saying that she learned nothing and that she wants to return to duty.
Later, Tovar is preoccupied while having dinner in his quarters with Torgerson. Rosalyn grabs his attention, and Tovar makes an excuse to retreat to his bedroom, where she is waiting. Torgerson storms out annoyed. Rosalyn tells Tovar that the Anomaly is going to be sent to Romulus for the installation of a new Praetor, and that the Vulcans, including Sh’rak will be attending. She is concerned that the Vulcans are going to try to ally with the Romulans. Starfleet will be sending two guests of honor along with the Anomaly: two very ancient Admirals who once served with Admiral Kristen Larkin.
Before the ceremony, Prosak runs into her father, Ambassador Rorshak, who takes her to see, the Praetor-to-be, Proconsul Prilosek. Prosak uses the Vulcan neck pinch to knock out Rorshak and Prilosek. Tovar, feeling something is wrong, goes looking for Prosak. Prosak is about to kill Prilosek with a neurotoxin normally used by Starfleet operatives. Sh’rak’s meld is controlling her, and he plans for this assassination to end the Federation-Romulan alliance. Before she can administer the toxin, though, Prosak has the needle kicked out of her hand by Rosalyn Bain. After a fight, Rosalyn knocks out Prosak just as Tovar arrives. She tells Tovar to take credit for stopping Prosak and have Prosak scanned for signs of an invasive mind meld.
The ceremony is postponed, and Sh’rak and the Vulcans depart. Later, the ceremony is completed without incident. While Prosak’s brain shows signs of tampering, there’s no definitive proof that it was the Vulcans. Dr. Natalia Kasyov and Dr. Fred Nooney work to repair the neural pathways that were changed. Once she wakes up, Prosak tells Bain and Tovar that this is all due to Sh’rak’s influence. Most Vulcans have no interest in conquest.
Two months later, Bain and Tovar take Prosak to have dinner at the Bain’s home in England. Upon seeing Rosalyn, Prosak panics and flees the room for reasons she can’t comprehend.
