The plague! The plague! Is Dr. Fred Nooney the only hope for a disease-ravaged society? Are his worst enemies his own colleagues in the medical profession? It's going to take a heck of a lot more than an apple to keep Doctor Nooney away as you stare into "The Face of Things That Went."
Summary
The USS Anomaly is racing to Bechode Prime with a medical team from the Federation Medical Society that is being sent to try to stop a plague raving the planet. This plague is causing the Bechodians to lose the lines of bumps running up their nose and forehead. The victims now look like humans, Betazoids, and every other non-bumpy humanoid species in the galaxy, much to the panic of the Bechodian leader..
Cabral is anxious to try his new hovercam off the ship and asks Dr. Natalia Kasyov to go down to Bechode Prime with him, so he can see the sights. She is not sure this is appropriate during a medical emergency but agrees after a bit of pleading from him.
Dr. Fred Nooney goes to see Captain Reginald Bain to complain that the medical team won't let him join the effort to cure the plague. Bain says that Nooney will have to work it out with the head of the team, Dr. Wudya Finis. Nooney beams down to join the team without being asked. Since he is there and probably has some skills, since he is the Chief Medical Officer of a starship, the team decides to let Nooney stay. After he tries one of his overly-thorough examinations on a Bechodian and brings Steve! in to entertain them via a portable holo-emitter, the medical team sends Nooney out to see if he can determine the origin of the plague.
Nooney runs into Kasyov and Cabral, who are touring around the Bechodian capital city, then hurries off to continue asking the residents if they know what got them sick.
Meanwhile on the Anomaly, the crew all line up to get physicals from Nurse Ih'vik, since Nooney is off the ship. While standing in the line, Bain meets Chief Comptroller Martin Kawafura and, once discovering what Kawafura does on the ship, makes it his mission to find him a real line of work, all the while ignoring Kawafura's protests that he likes his job.
Unsuccessful at determining the cause of the plague, Nooney returns to the medical team with lunch and a new plan. He takes one of the afflicted Bechodians back into a treatment room, who emerges a while later with all of his head bumps restored. The medical team is shocked that Nooney found a treatment for the plague, but decidedly less so when he reveals that he did it with plastic surgery, which along with pediatrics is his specialty.
During lunch, Cabral mentions to Kasyov that he saw a plague like this before a couple of centuries earlier while serving on a different ship. A planet imported the frilia flower from Krall Three that had this same bump removing effect on the populace. Kasyov takes Cabral to a nearby nursery and confirms that a trader did recently sell several of the flowers to them. She buys one and takes it to Nooney, hoping he can show up the medical team by solving the plague. Nooney doesn't take any of her hints, so Kasyov has tell him straight out that the flower is the source. Once Nooney takes the flower to the team, they let Starfleet know that they no longer need the Anomaly to stick around and that they'll arrange other transportation home. Nooney gets back to work in sickbay treating a variety of sprains, broken ribs, and pulled muscles resulting from Ih'vik's exams.
