With Captain Alexander Rydell taking leave for a month, Commander Travis Dillon sees his big chance to prove his command abilities. But there are others travelling the road to the center seat. Is he doomed to never command? And are there worse things for the rest of the crew than having to obey Dillon for a month?
Summary
When Captain Alexander Rydell takes a month's leave to oversee work on his renovations of The Suburb, Commander Travis Dillon assumes that he will be the one in command of the USS Secondprize during Rydell's absence. Instead, Starfleet has decided to put Captain Jack Woodall of the USS Orleans in temporary command. Woodall comes aboard with his security chief, Lieutenant Nell Vansen and, while Woodall and Vansen attempt to instill order on the Secondprize, making the crew miserable in the office, Dillon flees to a holodeck. The command crew soon can't take anymore of Woodall and Vansen and decide that they need Dillon to actually be a first officer and stand up to the new captain on behalf of the crew. It takes Commander Jaroch asking for Dillon's help, which Jaroch is loathe to do, but Dillon finally leaves the holodeck and goes to talk to Woodall in an attempt to convince the acting captain that he needs Dillon's help to gain the respect of the crew. Woodall isn't buying it, but right after Dillon leaves the ready room where he was speaking with Woodall and Vansen, the two Orleans officers collapse.
For the remainder of the month, Woodall and Vansen find that they're dealing with a model crew. Of course, they have no idea that Dillon had them gasses with anethezine and stuck in a holodeck simulation of the Secondprize. When Rydell returns, Woodall sings the crew's praises, then heads back to his ship. Rydell smartly decides that he doesn't want to know what really happened.
