The threat of The Critics hovers over Waystation, but only Leximas understands the true danger they represent. With the Critics in control of the Starshine Kids, things look extraordinarily bad. Can Leximas stop them before they put their plan into action? Will Commander Lisa Beck get through an entire official function without punching out a stuffy admiral? Are the renovations up to specs? Will this story end with a cliffhanger?

Summary

With construction on the renovated Waystation complete, the only thing standing between the crew and their new home is the grand opening ceremony. The USS Orleans commanded by Jack Woodall is scheduled to arrive at the station carrying Admiral Thomas Wagner, Admiral Frank McGrath, and Federation Vice-President Maruac. Leximas discovers that The Critics are controlling the Starshine Kids and goes to warn Commander Lisa Beck who is in Waystation Village's one holomodule with Dr. Amedon Nelson running through a simulation called Halloween 36: Termination Station in which Beck and Nelson are trying to kill the near-invulnerable serial killer, Michael Myers. Beck agrees to send Sean Russell to talk to Sesil.

Russell finds the Starshine Kids' temple deserted. The Kids have already loaded themselves into cargo containers that are scheduled to be moved from the make-shift Andorian Restaurant in Waystation Village to the new Waystation. Leximas begins to meditate, sending her mind outward to learn what she can about the Critics as the Starshine Kids pour out of their cargo containers and quickly take up positions in the new station. Unaware that the station is now occupied, Commander Beck, Yeoman Tina Jones, and Bradley Dillon lead Admirals Wagner and McGrath and Vice President Meruac on a tour of the new station.

Leximas is able to contact the Ushers, who reveal themselves to be the source of her mind-guide. They work for The Directors, a group of omnipotent beings working against the Critics. The Ushers explain that the battle between the Critics and Directors will be settled on the material plane and that each group is gathering its forces. The Critics plan to use Waystation as their primary base of operations for their army, the Starshine Kids. Before Leximas can do anything about it, her module explodes thanks to a bomb set off by Sesil. Beck and the others are taken captive by the Starshine Kids. As Lieutenant Commander Walter Morales, Colonel Martin Lazlo, Russell, and Porter scramble to deal with what has happened on Waystation Village, they detect the new Waystation's shields raising. Sesil comms Waystation Village, thanks them all for the new station, and informs the crew that Beck, Jones, and the other hostages are about to become Starshine Kids.
