Summary

Picking up where the last story left off, Captain Reginald Bain, Lieutenant Commander Tovar, and Centurion Nortal are beamed off of Vulcan and onto a Vulcan ship. Commander Prosak is not with them. Surat and Surap, who are part of Logicians for Order and Law (LOL), the resistance against the government, explain that they rescued the away team from Sh’rak’s guards, but Prosak was beamed elsewhere by someone else. They suspect that Sh’rak has her and dissuade Bain from trying to mount a rescue. Bain asks to contact the USS Anomaly, which they allow.

Prosak finds herself on a stage where people are cheering for her. She demands to know what is happening, then everything goes black and she is suddenly on Romulus with her father, Rorshak. It is years in the past, and he talks about first hearing of the RommaVulc movement and asks about Prosak’s visit with her mother Eudora, who believes Romulans and Vulcans should be unified. Rorshak insists that Prosak ends her association with RommaVulcs, and she says she will. Rorshak leaves, and Sh’rak appears, accusing her of lying. She demands to know why he is doing this to her. Sh’rak replied that she should just let the experience unfold around her.

The scene shifts again to the day she met Vorak while practicing zero gee maneuvers and then to a meal they shared together and then to a meeting of the RommaVulcs, where she met Harvak, who found the methods of the RommaVulcs to attract followers to be pointless. Instead, he feels that strong leadership, swift action, and careful planning were the way to unification with the Vulcans. Harvak is surprised that she already has a sharal and says that it is a shame because he is looking for a sharal of his own.

Prosak’s world shifts again to her graduation day from Starfleet Academy. She and Rorshak discuss the differences between RommaVulc philosophy and his work as an ambassador to improve the relationship between the Romulan Empire and the Federation. Once he leaves, Sh’rak again appears to taunt her, but Prosak is able to grab him and slam him against a nearby wall. He flees and causes the scene to shift to a time when she was on the USS Encino and Bain, then commanding the USS Maladventure saved her ship from being destroyed by the Breen. Prosak tries to take control of the vision. Sh’rak appears and tells her that this was the first day that she forgot to wear her IDIC symbol. He presses her on her loyalty to the RommaVulc cause and says that her loyalty means everything.

Prosak sets the ship to autodestruct, and when the countdown hits zero, she finds herself in a room sitting across from her mother, who was mind melding with her. Eudora explains that she was testing Prosak to make sure that Sh’rak hadn’t gotten to her and changed her like he has other Romulans. She beamed Prosak away before LOL could get her because she feels Prosak’s mission on Vulcan is unfinished. They are now in a RommaVulc compound on Vulcan, which Eudora has evacuated of everyone except herself and Prosak. She has also contacted Sh’rak and revealed their location, so Sh’rak’s guards will take her and Prosak to him.

The Vulcan ship rendezvouses with the USS Leviathan, and Bain beams aboard to head back to the Anomaly at the Neutral Zone. Tovar and Nortal remain with LOL to help rescue Prosak.

Prosak and Eudora are taken to Sh’rak’s office, where Eudora reveals that Sh’rak is actually a Romulan pretending to be a Vulcan. As Sh’rak’s guards drag them away to a cell, Prosak realizes that Sh’rak is Harvak. He tells her that if she’d gone out with him when he asked her to, they could have avoided all of this trouble.

Bain arrives on the Anomaly and requests command of the fleet from Admiral Kristen Larkin. She gives it to him, and Bain says it’s time to drive the Romulan fleet out of their space.
