The USS Anomaly is called away from their patrol duties in the Romulan Empire to answer a call for help from an unlikely source: the Green Borg. What problem could be so bad that Borg requires Federation help? Find out as we make use of the "Hard Sell."
Summary
Captain Reginald Bain is suffering through a status meeting on the Romulan fleet’s rebuilding efforts when Admiral Kristen Larkin gives him a much-needed reprieve and a mission. The Manager at the Green Borg Collective of Bargains has requested Bain’s assistance urgently. Bain beams up to the USS Anomaly to get underway.
Shortly before this, Commander Vioxx returned to the Anomaly angry and disappointed after Romulan High Command refused to put him in command of a warhawk. Sub-Commander Remax tells him to put the thought out of his head because it is never going to happen. They have been exiled to the Anomaly. On the bridge, they find Engineer Selex and Commander Prosak arguing about Selex’s suggestion to improve the efficiency of the anti-singularity drive by removing a layer or two of shielding. Bain arrives and orders the crew to make ready for immediate departure.
After a wonderful time together, Lieutenant Shelly Marsden awakens to find that Lieutenant Commander Tovar is no longer in bed with her. She smells wonderful cooking aromas, though, and follows them to Tovar’s holopod, inside of which he has created a kitchen. Toflay is in control, though, and tells her that Tovar’s past lives are happy that she and Tovar are together. He sends her off to get a shower and get dressed while he finishes the meal. When she joins Tovar, who is back in control, for breakfast, he notes that she seems troubled.
Selex tells Vioxx and Remax that they have to kill Prosak because of her RommaVulc allegiance. Vioxx says it’s a stupid idea, but Selex presses on, saying that as ranking officer, Vioxx should do it. Remax picks up the argument, saying that Vioxx hasn’t thought it through. If he killed Prosak, at worst he would be put in the brig and handed over to the Romulans, who would probably declare him a hero and give him command of a warhawk for killing a RommaVulc. Intrigued by the thought of getting to go home to command a warhawk, Vioxx says he will consider it.
Once the Anomaly arrives at the Green Borg Collective of Bargains, the Manager demands that Bain beam over to his office immediately. He beams over with Tovar and Dr. Natalia Kasyov, at which point Remax tells Vioxx there will never be a better time. Vioxx refuses, since they are in the middle of BorgSpace and he cannot divert attention from his duties.
The Manager tells Bain that the Green Borg are under attack, then he suddenly blurts out an advertisement for a Dillon Consortium product. They’ve been infected with some kind of Consortium virus that they cannot purge, and they have had to close the Collective of Bargains. Bain promises that the Anomaly crew will do everything they can to help.
Bain goes into his holopod to unwind and finds himself joined by a blue-suited man who keeps talking to him about Dillon Consortium products. The man is out in his quarters as well. Bain looks out into the corridor and finds that every crewmember there is being followed by a copy of the man, each reciting a sales pitch. He comms the bridge and orders Vioxx to shut down the ship’s holographic systems. Vioxx says that they are locked out. Bain then comms Marsden, who tells them the same thing.
Tovar destroys every holoemitter on the bridge, giving them a bit of peace to discuss the situation. They know that they the Anomaly’s systems have somehow been infected by the same virus affecting the Green Borg and that the blue-suited man is Bradley Dillon, founder of the corporation that is now the Dillon Consortium. Holo-Bradleys stand in the doorways of Vioxx’s office, the hallway leading to the Captain’s Lounge, and even the bridge head, counting down the number of plaques commemorating the 350th anniversary of the colony on Halydol that are still available. Kasyov realizes that if the holograms are counting down, they must be receiving updated information somehow. That’s why the Green Borg can’t purge the virus. It’s continuous. Remax, Kasyov, and Marsden set to work trying to figure out where it is coming from. Kasyov theorizes that the Consortium signal must be masked as normal Green Borg Collective traffic; otherwise, the Green Borg would have detected and dealt with it. They find a source coming from outside of Green Borg space in the territory of another faction. After filtering out all signals except that one, the Holo-Bradleys are still counting down.
With that information, the Anomaly heads deeper into BorgSpace to trace the source of the ads. After narrowly avoiding a Red Borg scout ship, they find the source, an ancient Borg Cube that has been left abandoned over the third planet of a star system. Bain sends Tovar and Marsden over to the cube to shut down the signal. They find that the Consortium attached something to a Central Plexus of the cube, which is what is transmitting the signal. It’s protected by a forcefield, so Totap takes over Tovar and builds an explosive. Tovar regains control and tells Marsden to call for beam out right before it explodes, taking the entire cube with it.
All of the Anomaly’s systems go down as Engineering shuts down and purges the ship’s computer core. When sensors come back up, Tovar detects three Red Borg ships heading their way. With impulse, warp, and the anti-singularity drive still offline, Bain orders Sub-Lieutenant Zantak to use thrusters to take them into the planet’s atmosphere. Another couple of shots takes out the Anomaly’s thrusters, and the ship crashes to the planet below.
