While Vulcan forces continue to build up in the Neutral Zone, Captain Reginald Bain, Lieutenant Commander Tovar, Commander Prosak, and Centurion Nortal are sent on a seemingly impossibly mission to divert a war. Will they be successful? And, back on the USS Anomaly, will Commander Vioxx be able to settle the personal problems of Doctor Natalia Kasyov, while Admiral Kristen Larkin attempts to head off the escalating conflict on the front lines. Find out why everybody's "In One Door, Out the Other!"

Summary

Picking up where the last story left off, Lieutenant Commander Tovar opens the doors to his quarters expecting to see Lieutenant Shelly Marsden waiting in the corridor, but to his surprise it’s Commander Prosak. She tells him that her father, Ambassador Rorshak, will be joining the USS Anomaly for the journey back to the Neutral Zone where he will attempt to negotiate for peace with the Vulcans. She leaves just as Marsden arrives for dinner. Before Marsden and Tovar can relax, Captain Reginald Bain summons the senior officers to the conference room, where he and Admiral Kristen Larkin are waiting. Larkin explains that the Vulcans have continued to amass ships on their side of the Neutral Zone and that she needs the Anomaly to get there as quickly as possible.

Marsden has until the next morning to complete repairs and heads to engineering. Dr. Natalia Kasyov joins her to ask how things are with Tovar. Marsden says that they didn’t get time to talk then asks about Cabral. Kasyov says that she has decided not to pursue a relationship because it would be too complicated.

Bain goes to see Larkin to ask why she came aboard. She tells him that she will be taking command of the Anomaly and the fleet while he undertakes a secret mission on the USS Navigator.

Tovar helps Marsden with repairs in the Jefferies tubes, but it ends with them kissing then more before they are interrupted by Bain, who was looking for Tovar. Bain informs him and Prosak that they will be going to Vulcan to remove High Chancellor Sh'rak, who Starfleet believes is not what he claims.

Kasyov breaks the news to Cabral that she does not want a relationship. He asks her to leave him alone for the remainder of the trip to the Neutral Zone.

Bain, Tovar, Prosak, and Centurion Nortal head to Vulcan on the Navigator, which has been equipped with a cloaking device. They beam down to surface disguised as Vulcans and soon receive a message from Larkin, who, after a disastrous diplomatic meeting with the Vulcans, is concerned that the Vulcans are aware of Bain’s team’s presence. They continue on to the Vulcan Grand Hall, posing as archivists there to study historical documents. Once inside, they make their way to Sh’rak’s office through the building’s duct work, but he is expecting them when they arrive. Bain attempts to reason with him, but Sh’rak calls in a horde of guards and orders Bain and company killed. As a fight begins, Bain sees his wife, Rosalyn Bain charge in and begin dispatching Vulcans right and left. Sh’rak beams away. Bain demands to know what Rosalyn is doing there, but she zaps him, Prosak, and Nortal with a mind wipe device and tells Tovar to get out of there. She leaves, and Tovar gets Bain, Prosak, and Nortal back into the ducts.

They make it safely outside but are waylaid by several armed Vulcans. Bain goes to comm the Navigator to call for beam out. He then sees it crashing into a mountain range in the distance. He prepares to fight these Vulcans, but then he is beamed away.

Back at the Neutral Zone, a fleet of Romulan warhawks decloaks behind the Starfleet ships and opens fire.
