In the 23rd Century, James T. Kirk was the epitome of what a Starfleet captain should be. In the 26th century, he's a psychotically demented hologram. But even holograms have desires and ambitions. Find out what the James T. Kirk Hologram really wants as we delve into his "Illusions of Grandeur - Part One."
Summary
The evil James T. Kirk hologram escapes from the Section 31 facility where he was being stored, after killing Il Cekir, the agent assigned to watch over him, obtaining the mobile emitter brought back by the USS Voyager, and storing the rest of the base’s crew in a transporter buffer.
On the USS Anomaly, Captain Reginald Bain is in his holopod playing cricket with his wife Rosalyn Bain over a remote connection. The holopod abruptly shuts down, and Commander Prosak informs him that Starfleet has ordered all holographic technology to be deactivated.
The Section 31 ship Sloan goes to the base where the Kirk hologram is, intent on destroying him before he can get away. Instead, Kirk takes over the ship and reactivates the evil holographic duplicate of Lieutenant Commander Tovar to assist him thanks to the mobile emitters Kirk is now replicating.
Admiral Kristen Larkin contacts the Anomaly and tells them that Starfleet fears that the Kirk hologram is planning to lead a holographic uprising. She is heading to the Anomaly to take command. Once she arrives, she orders the Anomaly to Beta Omadda Three, the location of the Mega-Sim. Starfleet believes the Kirk hologram will go there to recruit support for his uprising.
Unbeknownst to them, the Sloan, now controlled by the Kirk hologram, is phase cloaked ahead of the Anomaly. It decloaks, revealing a vessel three times the Anomaly’s size. The Sloan ship is able to instantly bring down the Anomaly’s shields are start battering the vessel’s ablative armor. Lieutenant Shelly Marsden gets the shields back up but not before the Kirk hologram sends over a transmission.
In sickbay, Steve! activates and marches out, his eyes now red. He goes to the bridge and begins attacking the officers there. Ensign Hector Arroyo is able to get the Anomaly into warp shortly before Dr. Natalia Kasyov and Tovar shut down Steve! by sending an electromagnetic pulse through the bridge. The pulse also takes out all of the bridge systems and Admiral Larkin.
The Sloan arrives at Beta Omadda Three, and the Kirk and Tovar holograms beam down the Federation Holography Complex there. Kirk goes to the woman working there and tells her that he and Tovar want to be uploaded to the Mega-Sim. She says that she will get him the proper forms, and, after a bit more conversation during which she reveals that she enjoys going into the Mega-Sim herself, the Kirk hologram asks her what her name is. She introduces herself as Audrey Bain.
Kasyov determines that Admiral Larkin’s nanoprocessors need to be repaired, which is going to take a lot of time and Larkin’s original schematics, which they don’t have. Marsden needs two hours to repair the shields and engines. Worried about Audrey, Bain decides to take the USS Navigator to Beta Omadda Three with Tovar, Arroyo, and a security team, leaving Prosak in command.
Audrey shows the Kirk and Tovar holograms the Mega-Sim, which is a device about the size of a large coffee can sitting on a table in her office. She puts on a neural tap chip, so she can enter the Mega-Sim and finally realizes that the Kirk and Tovar holograms have mobile emitters. She says that she needs to talk to her superiors, but the Kirk hologram has the Tovar hologram send them all into the Mega-Sim before she can do anything.
The Navigator arrives at Beta Omadda Three, but the Sloan is nowhere in sight. Bain is about to beam down with Tovar and the security officers when the Sloan, now under the command of the Moriarty hologram, decloaks and attacks, sending the Navigator crashing to the surface.
Bain, Arroyo, and Tovar find themselves back on the Anomaly, but can’t remember how they got there. They go the bridge and find the Kirk and Tovar holograms and Audrey there. The Kirk hologram informs them that they are now in the Mega-Sim and that they will be there for a long, long time.
