With colonization starting in earnest around Waystation, the Federation sends the rest of Colonel Martin Lazlo's battallion of Federation Marines. Now, the battle of wills between Commander Lisa Beck and Lazlo is more heated than ever. But Lazlo's about to make a move that will put his marines up against one of the most fearsome species the Federation has ever encountered. They're vicious, unstoppable, and gosh darn cute!
Summary
The announcement that the rest of Colonel Martin Lazlo's battalion of Federation Marines will be arriving soon, has Lazlo believing that a more equitable power sharing arrangement on Waystation is in order. After Commander Lisa Beck shoots down that idea, Lazlo contacts Lieutenant Craig Porter and asks him about nearby Class M worlds. When the remaining marines arrive, Commander Beck is pleased to see that a childhood friend, Stephanie Hodges is among them.
After getting the name of a Class M world from Porter, Lazlo orders his troops to pack up their gear and head out. He is determined to set up a base well away from the interference of Starfleet. Unfortunately, Lazlo and friends soon discover the planet's indigenous wildlife, a species of red-eyed rodents that could best be described as mind-controlling squirrels. Before long, the entire battalion except for Lazlo and Hodges have been taken over by the creatures, leaving Lazlo no option but to comm Waystation for help, which he really does not want to do. Two runabouts from Waystation arrive and beam up the marines, putting the affected ones into quarantine. Dr. Amedon Nelson is able to find a way to remove the creatures, and they are returned to their planet.
