When a reporter from Waystation's new holovision station almost causes a diplomatic incident, Captain Lisa Beck assigns Yeoman Tina Jones to make sure it never happens again. Read on as Jones single-handedly tackles the Fifth Estate!

Summary

During one of Frequoq Wuddle's visits to Waystation to see Dr. Amedon Nelson, whom he is dating, Wuddle and Nelson are ambushed in the docking bay by Joan Redding, a reporter with the Associated Worlds Network. She peppers the couple with questions and is punched into unconsciousness by Nelson. Wuddle departed for the Multek Enclave, and, when Redding awakens, Captain Lisa Beck explains to her that there are powerful groups inside the Enclave that are aware that other life exists and that monitor Federation holovision broadcasts. With Redding were to report on Wuddle, the secret of his visits to Waystation and his relationship with Dr. Nelson would be discovered and possibly cause a serious incident with the Multeks. Redding is unmoved and decides to report anyway. After Redding leaves the docking bay, Beck assigned Yeoman Tina Jones to keep an eye on Redding.

Redding's report on Wuddle never leaves the station due to a convenient issue with the AWN transmission, and the next day Jones begins tracking Redding. She follows her into the Dillon Enterprises levels, where Redding spends some time outside a door reading a padd. Spotting Jones, Redding flees, and a moment later Bradley Dillon emerges from the door and, seeing Jones, offers her a tour. That night Redding reports that Dillon Enterprises has lost a piece of experimental technology. Bradley is furious and wants to know how Redding got the information. Working with Lieutenant Commander Craig Porter, Jones determines that Redding has hacked into OpsNet, the scheduling network for the operations staff which lists upcoming events, requests for service or resources, docking bay assignments and the like. Jones asks Porter to put in an entry, luring Redding to a docking bay for a false first contact. They are able to catch Redding and confiscate her padd.

Undeterred, she convinces Hypple, the Multek who lives on Waystation, to take her into Multek space for a tour. Jones and Porter pursue them in the Runabout USS Roanoke, and Redding opens fire on them without Hypple realizing what is happening. Jones and Porter are able to stop Redding's ship, and Jones flattens Redding with a swift punch to the jaw. Phillip Harper, the owner of AWN, arrives at Waystation soon afterward and promises to rein in Redding. Jones also notices that Harper and Captain Beck seem quite taken with each other.

Author's Comments

The story about Dillon Enterprises that Redding reports as well as Bradley Dillon's subsequent talk about it are references to the events of The Next Item Up For Bid, part of the Next Federation Arc in which Dillon Enterprises loses their prototype subspace generator.
