As you'd expect after a cliffhanger, things are fairly grim. The USS Secondprize has been wrecked, Waystation has been captured, and Captain Alexander Rydell, Commander Travis Dillon, and Lieutenant Commander Patricia Hawkins are about to be executed. Let's rejoin the fun, shall we?

Summary

Captain Rydell is able to delay the execution by asking Spaanz and Taanz to explain the logic of Sulu's plan. On the wrecked Secondprize, Commander Jaroch, Commander Scott Baird, and Lieutenant Andrea Carr plan to take a shuttle to rescue Rydell, Dillon, and Hawkins, knowing that they will have to dodge the one remaining Next Federation ship left behind to patrol the asteroid ring to do it. On Waystation, the station crew and residents are herded into cargo bays and imprisoned inside subspace pockets created by the subspace generators.

Jaroch is able to disrupt the execution, allowing Rydell, Dillon, and Hawkins to escape from Spaanz and Taanz, and then get them out of the Next Federation base before it self-destructs. Rydell turns his attention to the other major problem: the don't have a ship anymore. Fortunately, there's a lovely Next Federation ship, an Excelsior-class no less, just ripe for the taking. The Secondprize officers are able to get aboard the Next Federation ship and incapacitate its small crew. Rydell knows that if word reaches Starfleet that the Secondprize has been destroyed, his crew will be scattered around Starfleet. To prevent this, he has the Next Federation ship converted into the new Secondprize while destroying every identifying trace in the wreck of the old Secondprize. Once the conversion is complete and the crew aboard, the new Secondprize races to Waystation, which they quickly discover is no longer there.

The Secondprize continues on after the subspace generator-lined freighter, intercepting the vessel and opening fire to disable it. The resulting explosions disable the freighter but also damage the subspace generators. Space is filled with subspace distortion bubbles, which merge together into a massive expanding sphere that engulfs the Secondprize.
