What do you do when the fabric of the universe itself turns against you? I don't know either. That's why I asked you. Well, somebody on the USS Secondprize better figure out an answer soon, or they could be in big trouble.

Summary

The Secondprize has been engulfed inside the subspace distortion field created by the damage sustained by the subspace generators. Before they can figure out how to escape, the bridge is invaded by a man calling himself Steve, and his blue cartoon dog, named Blue, appropriately enough. Blue evidently knows how the Secondprize can escape the distortion field, so Lieutenant Andrea Carr is assigned to play Blue's Clues with Steve to get the answer.

Commander Jaroch determines that each subspace generator has formed a bubble of altered reality. With no other options, Captain Alexander Rydell and Jaroch take one runabout while Lieutenant Commanders Emily Sullivan and Patricia Hawkins take another to see if they can find the bubble containing Waystation. Rydell and Jaroch eventually find the station in a reality where it is being used as a dumbbell by a giant weightlifter. Rydell sends Jaroch to get Hawkins and Sullivan, while he beams aboard the station to rescue the crew. He reaches the cargo bays and shuts down the generator containing Captain Lisa Beck, Karina Durham, and most of the rest of the Waystation command crew. Rydell then leaves with Jaroch, Sullivan, and Hawkins to secure Admiral Hitori Sulu's freighter, which is at the center of the distortion field, while Beck and the others retake Waystation from the Next Federation officers.

The freighter has become a hell-like reality, with its crew transformed into various creatures. Rydell and the others are forced to retreat. Meanwhile, Carr and Steve have figured out Blue's Clues. The Secondprize can channel warp energy through the deflector dish to glue subspace back together. Once they do that, reality will be repaired. On the downside, Sulu will be able to release his fleet. Knowing that's a risk they will have to take, Rydell orders the Secondprize to proceed. As soon as reality is repaired, Rydell, Jaroch, Hawkins, and Sullivan beam back aboard the freighter and battle the crew. Rydell chases after Sulu, but the Admiral is able to deactivate the subspace generators, releasing the Next Federation fleet. Just as the fleet is appearing, a far larger Starfleet force, commanded by Admiral Cooper, arrives. Admiral Earl Wyndham was able to contact Cooper and convince him to send help. As the Next Federation ships surrender, Sulu beams into one of the Secondprize's runabouts and steals it, making his escape.

The Secondprize tows Waystation back where it belongs, and Rydell is determined that Sulu is not going to remain free for long.

This story is part of the Next Federation Arc.

Um...what can I say? When my kids were young, I watched A LOT of Blue's Clues. It could have been worse, though. I could have used the Teletubbies.
