Summary
Dr. Amedon Nelson and Frequoq Wuddle are on their way back to Waystation after four days away together. Nelson is frustrated that Wuddle refuses to take her back to Multos, but he says that she cannot visit until the Grand Opening when they will open for business to the rest of the galaxy. They are buzzed by a Romulan scout ship. Since relations with the Romulans have been good, Dr. Nelson doesn't see anything to worry about. On his way back to Multos after dropping Nelson off at Waystation, Wuddle is again buzzed by the Romulans. This time, they hail him and tell him that he is in their space. They have claimed Edgeworld as their own and established a colony there. Wuddle turns around and heads straight back to Waystation.
He meets with Captain Lisa Beck, who tells him that the Romulans are probably just trying to get a foothold in the region, since the Federation has been expanding into the Beta Quadrant. She also tells Wuddle not to call in the Multek fleet because the Romulans may use that provocation as an excuse to take over the entire Multek Enclave. Beck will try and deal with the situation through diplomatic channels. This doesn't go well. The Romulan Ambassador has no interest in giving the planet back and informs Beck that the Romulans will obliterate the Multeks if the Multeks try to retake Edgeworld. When Admiral Leelan Fonn finds out that she contacted the Romulan Ambassador, he makes Beck promise that she will not get involved. He does not want a situation with the Romulans on his hands. Beck follows the order to the letter. She does not get involved. Instead, she goes to find Commander Walter Morales, who is having breakfast with Stephanie Hodges. She tells Morales that she is not getting involved but that if someone else were to get involved, that someone would have to make sure that the Federation was not implicated in whatever actions were taken. Furthermore, she has decided that the station's junior officers haven't been getting enough command experience, so she is giving her command crew a few days off. Message delivered, she leaves Morales to figure out what the heck he's going to do to get rid of the Romulans.
