The first Multek mission sent to see what, if anything, is actually outside the Multek Enclave has disappeared, and Frequoq Wuddle needs Waystation's help to find his missing people.

Summary

A Multek exploratory vessel sent by Frequoq Wuddle to explore beyond the Multek Enclave encounters a Collector ship and is, not surprisingly, collected. Having lost contact with his ship, Wuddle goes to Waystation for help, since Starfleet is far more familiar with these sorts of situations. Joan Redding uses Wuddle's impending visit and the threat of her ambushing Wuddle as a way to get Lieutenant Commander Craig Porter to ask her to dinner. Meanwhile, Federation President Bradley Dillon insists that Captain Lisa Beck hold the meeting with Wuddle in his presence and in one of his conference rooms.

Porter takes Redding to dinner at Earthly Eats, a new Bolian-run Earth cuisine restaurant that has opened on Deck 97, during which Redding extracts an admission from him that he would like to date her. In the meeting with Wuddle, the Frequoq explains about his lost people and requests the loan of a ship, Commander Walter Morales and Dr. Amedon Nelson. President Dillon agrees to the request. After the meeting they Starfleet contingent and Wuddle run into Stephanie Hodges. She has been sent by Colonel Martin Lazlo to fake an assassination attempt on Bradley to show the president that he needs marine protection instead of his Special Secret Section. Lietenant Sean Russell takes Wuddle to the docking bay to get the Runabout USS Cumberland prepped while Morales remains behind to watch for Hodges and Dr. Nelson asks Beck for advice on how to tell Wuddle about her symbiont. Hodges pulls off her fake attempt and delivers Lazlo's message to President Dillon just before Morales whisks her out of the Presidential office suite.

Five days later, the Cumberland reaches the last known coordinates of the Multek ship. The detect possible signals coming from a nearby solar system and go to investigate. There they find several small Collector ships. Unfortunately the Collectors spot them. They get a distress call off to Waystation before battling the Collectors as best they can. After a short fight, the Cumberland is damaged, taking down the shields. Wuddle, Morales, and Nelson are beamed away by the Collectors as the Cumberland is grabbed by Collector tractor beams.

Beck scrambles the USS Wayward, taking Lazlo, Hodges, and a contingent of marines with her. Reaching the Cumberland's last known coordinates, they find only a small box with a beacon attached to it. They bring it on board. Inside, held in a stasis field, is Midon.
